restoring hand function
restoring hand function
Has anybody have any luck with restoration of full function to the hand and fingers? If so, what type of surgery did you have? Where did you have it done and who was the doctor? I am trying to find answers for my 18 yr old son. He was in a car accident almost 3 mos. ago and has a BP injury with a possible avulsion (still checking, a CT myelogram is next). He has regained use of most of his arm from the shoulder to the wrist, but the hand remains almost totally paralized, and the pain comes and goes, sometimes very intense. Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

Re: restoring hand function
I had a severe shouldre dislocation 5 years ago, no avulitions to my knoweledge. I regained movement in my arm, but none to my hand. I had really gave up hope that i would ever have movement in my hand. to make a long story short, I met a Dr at a social gathering and he kept looking at my hand. and asked what happened, I tol;d him and said I had just given up that there was any hope. he said he knew someone that could help me. well anyway he reffered me to to two DRS. in boston at the New England Baptist Hospital. DR. Nailbuf, and Dr. Kimble. after several visits, they proposed a tendon transfer and fusion of my thumb. anyway I have mechanical function of my hand. it basicily can make a fist and i still cant spread my fingers or feel my hand. but it is by far much better than it was. I would contact them as soon as possible . here is there telephone #Hand surgical associates inc.{617 738-0857

i couldnt have surgery,i had a 1% chance it would work, but i did have a wonderful physical theropist.
dayton ohio,robert frank.
he called me his walking parapoligic.
we did what should not be done.but i was at my last chance, depression and hopes of death was all i was thinking about.i went on a spinal streching table for upper and lower spin.3 times a week, the pain was unreal, but i refused to give up.my hands started working after only 3 months.but each session on the table i got up in so much pain i cried.but i kept going back for more because i could feel the difference.i always said my arms and hands felt like someone put a rubber band around them held my arms up high and let the rubber bands off.the throbbibg the swelling the purple look.i wasnt able to pick up a sheet of paper.then slowly.i was able to turn caps on bottels, not open them, lol,,but i was able to turn them.then i was able to comb my hair, still working on that, but the difference is amazing.
i have just been released to find a job.not much of a job,but i am happy to have gotten this fare.it doesnt happen over night,i went to many doctors, specialist pain doctors, everyone, robert frank gave me my life back.please call him and maybe he can work with youre theropist in youre area and do the same things he did with me,but i did theropy on my own at home,i rolled towels i figere flipped the phone book,i worked hard at theropy and at home.you have to want to get your hands back,i saw to many people in theropy, who did nothing and got no results, none with what we have.but it makes no difference.work hard and call him.

Re: restoring hand function
Thanks for the doctor referal, Ken! It is good to know that it is possible to regain some hand function back. How long after your hand stopped working did you have the surgery?
Re: restoring hand function
Thank you, Charlotte! Glad to see you recovered, with help from the therapist but also because of your own hard work and perseverance. Thanks for the referal and phone number!

Re: restoring hand function
It was exactly two years post injury. in my reply I was kind of tired, but I could not even hold up my wrist. I still have a considerable amount of pain in my hand. I would strongly suggest calling DR. Kimble in Boston. between this website and having the tendon transfer my life is much better. Ken
