frustrated with school teacher, kindergarten

Post by bugsntazz »

Hello,
My son is BPI and just got his report card. Terrible....He has had a very rough time at kindergarten. He developed some sensory issues and we made it clear to her how to handle him. We had three prev conferences and no mention that he was not participating. So now first report card comes out, and all 1 and 2. She stated that she tested him and he is below average. Everything she tested him on he refused to do. I took him today to neurologist today and thed tested him for alot of stuff. We see the doctor next week with the results. The person who took the test told me that he is very very bright passed the Kindergarten first grade test she gave him. when i looked at it it was the same test his teacher gave. He did show borderline short term attention but had alot of difficulty sustaining attention on lengthy task. So indication is maybe have ADHD. He has come along way since the beginning of school and does all his work at home no problem. I am so mad at his teacher and do not understand why he refuses to answer to her but with doctors and OT he shows how bright he is. His report is really cruel It is rated 1-4. With 3 being passing. She gave him 1 in areas of respecting teacher, desire to learn 1, quality work 1, She does not understand my son even though I have had several meetings with her and the assistant principal. Now i may have to deal with ADHD and he is only 5. The only good news so far is that the test in doctor office shows that he is in the high percentage for his age in reading and math. Sorry so long just need to vent alittle and any other people having ADHD at such a young age.

I'm so sorry for what you are going thru. My little guy is only 3 months old, so I'm sure we have a lot of frustrating experiences ahead of us. Is Attention Deficit syndrome often a part of a bpi injury? Is this something I should expect as well down the road?
Hang in there!

You know maybe he needs more time at home before hitting the schools, It is really pretty easy to home school k through grade 3, for some kids the one on one and the calmer home environment for the first couple years is just what they need. I home school till Grade 3 or 4 and my kids integrated fine when they eventually went and were actually ahead in many areas. It's not hard to find positive social interaction for them when you home school either- might be worth looking into. I found this was especially helpful to my bpi child as there can be some complications in their learning and they need someone who cares enough to be able to help them through it.

I just don't understand why they can't give little kindergarteners a compassionate teacher to start off school with. What's this all about? Maia has a b**ch too! It just SUCKS! It's like a war! Can't stand it.

I wish you the best - don't have any advice to give you - I'm in the same boat. Going to school to volunteer all the time hasn't helped either - she singles her out more with me even there.

Do you know it only takes me one and a half hours a day to do their school work for grade one and kindergarden and when we did the grade three provincial standardized test - that they give to every child that grade in the province my kids scored in the 90 percentiles to 100 percentiles - this left lots of time for therapy, swimming , afterschool clubs etc for socialization, soccer , swimming, music,- and I was able to work part time and still had tonnes of time with my child because they were with me all day - When my kids finally went to school they were the top of their classes and made friends just fine, but were able to handle the long day and regimentation a little better when they were older. I know its not for everyone but if your really frustrated it's not as hard as you might think- I'd be happy to share curriculum ( mine is all usa based) ideas if interested e-mail me if you like.

ADHD? or is it that schools are asking little five year old bundles of boy energy to sit all day doing boring tasks they don't want to do and before the attention span is long enough. Believe me it doesn't need to take all day in a desk for him to learn all he needs and more at age 5 or 6.

I am so sorry your precious little one has had one more struggle in his life already. As a Kindergarten teacher, I understand the frustration a lot of teachers deal with, but having a parent so willing to communicate and work with you usually makes a world of difference. I have found that in a majority of cases, most 5 year old children are too young to be considered ADD or ADHD. Most doctors will tell you that as well. As a mom who has a son with a ROBI I have learned to be more patient with children who don't " fit inside the box". I would go to the principal of the school, and address the situation. The teacher needs to be more loving and compassionate, and she may find that will make all the difference.

Best of luck to you!! Don't let this one nasty lady, break your son's spirit. He is going to need it!!

Some teachers are good some are bad. Just like in any other perfession. Have you tried asking the teacher for a specific list of things he needs to work on? Sometimes kids have personality conflicts. Is there a different K room he can be moved to? What is the class size? Are there other kids with special needs? Sometimes you can have a saint for a teacher but if too much has been lumped on him or her it can really affect how they deal one on one. Is there a teacher's aid available to help keep him on tasks? How long is he expected to work on one activity? I teach. One of the stratagies is to give three options to the students. They are three projects that they need to complete in a specifed time, but they chose what to work on and for how long. This helps a lot. Sometimes they seem to be bouncing back and forth but they get it done and it is great work. It also helps to rebuild their confidence if they have had problems in the past. Good Luck.

I have heard recently that ADHD is being linked to processed foods and too much sugar. Maybe the diet could be adjusted.

We're not dealing with kindergarten yet but my heart goes out to you.
