Need help with clothes for operation

Post by Dean-na »

Well, I posted this on the other board. I am going to have the osteotomy done on 2/20, but I won't be wearing a cast. It will be in metal rods. It is called a Ilizarov Fixator. I need some suggestions on what kind of clothes I can wear.

I can't help you with clothing -

Big and baggy - with lots of velcro - good thing you live in a warm state... or you would need a big jacket too...

Only teasing, I am so excited for you as you prepare to take this big step. I am glad you finally found a doctor. I guess you will be the first for this surgery and Rachel will follow... wow amazing.

Deanna -

When I was visiting a local hospital recently I saw a young gentleman with this type of device on his leg - he was wearing a jogging suit type of pants. I was trying to look closely at it to see how his pants were fashioned to accomodate the rods and bolts, etc. I couldn't tell though - it was black. I would imagine it was velcro'd however.

Can the doc give you pictures of what an arm with the device on will look like? that should help you figure out where to cut and velcro, etc.

Here is a web site I found that you may find helpful.
http://www.ilizarov.org.uk/index1.htm

Hope it helps. I will have to think about different clothing options.

I know with my surgeries I wore my fathers big shirts. I needed something with large arm holes to get over the bandage. Another key for me was a button down front. Made it easier to get on. Of course I still required help regardless of what I wore. As big as the metal rods look I am not sure what to tell you.

Hey Thank you so much for posting the website on the Ilzarov. I just briefly checked it out and will have to do so more when I get home from picking up the kids. Do you know if anyone has had one on their arm? For this type of injury? I just saw a few leg ones. I'm sure it kind of works the same though. Look at me asking all these questions and I still have a ton of research to do on it.
Thanks for sharing
