Hi Sharlon,
My son Matt had the acromionlasty/Caps done on Nov. 4, 2003. Before the surgery he couldn't supinate to neutral much less past neutral. Not 2 weeks after surgery he was able to supinate not only to neutral but slightly past it. He is 3 years old and this was his second surgery. He had primary at 5 mths old. This surgery also improved the position of his arm. He was internially rotated, now it rest in a more natural position.

If you go to this link, at the bottom of the page is pics of my son in the cast and splint. He had to wear the splint for 4 weeks 24 hours and 4 weeks at night. I believe though that the length of time with the splint varies with child. I know other parents whos child had to wear the splint longer. I know there are a few other children who had the surgery and were supinating the week they had surgery. Let me know if you want to talk.

Re: anyone had results from acromionplasty?
Kelly,
It is great to hear that you are pleased with the results. If it is okay I have two questions.
1) Do you know the odds of more supination returning in time or is what you see now probably what will be gained from the surgery?
2) Does the doctor anticipate the newly gained supination will stay over time?
3) You mentioned that your child was internally rotated and that his arm is in a more neutral position now (yippeee!), I am wondering is his arm still somewhat internally rotated? If so, what do they say is causing that? (we have been dealing with internal rotation issues too)
I hope to hear from you.
Thanks!!!

Sharlon
Aaron is 2 yrs old and just had the new (improved) caps surgery and he has great supination (almost complete) but he has to have his hand close to his body he cannot reach out too far. He can now touch his ear!!! Also he does not compensate as much anymore, he still does a little though. I am happy with the results but I just wish it were overnight. Is that too much to ask for? LOL. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Hi Sharlon,
My son Bradley had the clavicular-acomioplasty w/ shoulder reconstruction on Dec 1st. WOW! is all I can say. What an improvement. Internal rotation- gone, supination- in, He is a very happy child, he will be 2 next month. I ask him if his shoulder feels better, yes mommy, with a smile he replies. He looks normal now. To the average persons eye, they will never even know.

Re: anyone had results from acromionplasty?
Paula,
My child can fully supinate since having surgery to when the arm is bent by side, but same as Aaron, not when the arm is extended out in front. I am wondering if you know why this is or have been told by the doctor? Is it due to a weak bicep and that it takes more bicep to supinate with arm fully extended straight out in front?
Allison,
I love to hear such wonderful news. Could you please share more, when you say supination in, do you mean FULL supination (hand completely upright) with arm fully extended in front (minus any bicep/elbow contracture limitaions) without any compensation?
Also, how much supination did your child have prior to the surgery?
Wow, internal rotation gone. Awesome!!! Sounds like NO more surgeries!
Thanks for sharing.

Guest,
Bradley can get to full supination with his arm in front of him. The arm is slightly bent, elbow down. He does use his upper torso slightly to get to full supination. He went into the surgey with a severe contracture of the elbow. We were ultraflex splinting him every night. Since the surgery, mind you he is still in the splint for another weeks 24/7 and then 3 weeks after that at night. The contracture seems to be diminishing. I think it has to do with the humerus being in the proper place. I have a picture of him in his splint on Francines site....

Just do a search under Bradley.

Allison,
Thank you VERY much for sharing. When you say supination with the elbow down, are you referring to the elbow down near the side of the body or do you mean the arm is extended in front of the body with the elbow away from the side of the body (like if you were reaching out in front of you)?
That is so great about the contracture getting better. I would love to see that with my child. I hope it continues!
Thanks again.
