My 10 month old bpi daughter has decreased or no sensation in parts of her arm (we can tell by her reactions to e-stim and by her biting her thumb). Her motor function continues to improve. Does anyone know of any therapies to help return sensory nerves? Will this come back on its own? What will it be like for her to grow up without feeling in parts of her arm?
Thanks,
Tina

Re: decreased sensation in bpi arm
We were told to use a deep massage on her arm and do it frequently as well as rub different types of textures across her arm like beads, a blanket, something warm, something cold, but use a lotion and just rub the arm down and stretch it while doing it.

Re: decreased sensation in bpi arm
Our daughter is 5 now. She had intercostal nerve grafts at 11 months of age. Don't be discouraged!!! She will get sensation back as new nerves grow. Michaela used to bite the nails out of her left hand by the roots and couldn't feel it. I could put alcohol and it wouldn't phase her. I had to put clove oil on her fingers to help keep them out of her mouth. Now 4 years later she can tell me the alcohol stings, and when clipping or hangnails hurt. It just takes time. Get her started on TES. Our therapist also had us buy an electric massager called a ladybug. It looks just like one and they come in different colors. I found one at Walmart. Let her hold it and play with it and run it up and down her arm and back of her shoulder and around her neck. You can spoil her and hide this"therapy" at the same time.LeeAnne
