Scaphoid bone surgery-good hand
Scaphoid bone surgery-good hand
Has anyone broken thier scaphoid bone in their good hand? It's a fairly common injury in traumatic accidents. I go for surgery next Wed, July 16th and wanted to know how we with only one hand deal when the good one is put in a cast? Also, my career before my bpi was keyboarding 90% on laptop and desktop computers and 10% writing. I'm quite concerned this will no longer be possible with the good hand having problems as well, as I would be trying to prevent carpal tunnel and other overuse symptoms. Any and all comments welcomed!

Re: Scaphoid bone surgery-good hand
Unfortunately, I broke my scaphoid in my right hand, and I am right handed. Also, I am only 15, and my surgery was about 6 days before my finals (AP English-two essays, Global-one essay) and an Earth Science Regants exam. After surgery, my fingers were still exposed, so I could type. The school gave me a laptop to type on, so I could complete the essays. I didnt encounter any problems, except I now use my left thumb on the spacebar. But to have to type for a job....just make sure you have plenty of support for your wrist. Also, are you familiar with Homeopathy? Currently, I am on the remedy Calcarea, which aids the healing process of slow healing bones. I have more X-rays August 15, so then we will see if it helped

Hi, just wondering how your scaphoid is. Mine never healed so it's painful. I'm going for pt as the rom is terrible. Was 0% both ways, now it's 45 degrees back and 58 degrees forward.

There are special keyboards for this injury. It is shaped like a pyramid. This may help you, they are easy to find.

Thanks people, I'll have to check into keyboards as well as typing methods. I was shown different keyboarding methods and given websites for trial practices on each. If anyone wants further information I'll post them.

I've broken it in my right (dominant ) hand.
all healed perfectly & NO SCAR
go see Dr. Joseph Slade III at Yale New Haven.
he can fix it arthoscopically ( spelling?)
he's on the "cutting edge" of this surgery.

I broke this bone, went 2 months before i knew it was broken, and half of the bone died, they had to graff bone from my hip and screw the reamining part of the good bone with the bone from my hip. and it is still very painfull sometimes (sound familiar so far?), luckily it was my right hand (non dominant hand) but it still sucks, what a piece of crap bone. anyway, they never removed the screw and i was curious if they were suppose to?

Hi Allison,
My son, 27 uses 3 different one handed keyboards. You may reach Ryan at Ryan@ubpn.org and hopefully he will be able to help you. It may take him sometime to answer as he is working on a big project at work that is taking most of his time.
Good luck,
Hugs, Karen

Hi Justin, no the screw stays in forever.
My wrist still hurts and rom is still not what it should be. I see a specialist in March 2005.
I hope your surgery is sucessful, the worst case scenario is fusing all the wrist bones together if the bone never heals and dies completely.
Hi Karen, It's me from Canada, I was just thinking about that one handed key board again, only problem is my hand is small and the keyboards only come in one size ( I think) I'm getting terrible overuse pain in my shoulder from my regular keyboard.
