Is there any financial aid out there?

Post by Ladybug »

Hello, I am new. I posted as a guest in another forum and decided to go ahead and register. My post isn't displayed there yet. What I was wondering--It is my husband who's arm is paralyzed--is there any financial help out there? My husband is a teacher but during the summer he paints houses, etc. We rely a great deal on this summer income to get by. But I am worried about the extra strain he is putting on his GOOD arm by working 12 hour days all summer long, painting--I wish he could just rest and let him (and his good arm) take the summer off. Any input would be so appreciated. If we could just get a little financial help--this is so hard because our insurance is crappy--he really feels that he cannot quit working in the summer unless some other relief would come through. Please--any links, advice, thoughts, I welcome them. Thanks so much.

I don't know of any......I'd be interested to know too!!

This issue really sucks bad. One that everyone faces. Is there anyway he can teach summer school? If he burns out his other arm he could probably apply for disability why should it get to that!!!

Hi, Im sorry to hear about your problems. I'm not sure if this will help, but have you thought of programs such as food stamps. It may help out a little, so that the strain wont be as much. Just a thought. Good Luck

I don't know what state you live in and whether or not he works in a public or private school system, but I can share from my own experience.

I am 50 years old, LOBPI, and I took disability retirement last year from the Ohio State Teachers Retirement System. I was a professor at Kent State University in Ohio. The retirement application was very involved and they checked me out thoroughly, including an Independent Medical Exam and a thorough examination of all my medical records. But I received it without any questions or problems and the main reason was because my unaffected arm was exhibiting problems and signs of overuse.

It was a good decision for me.

#1 I don't miss the work. I thought I would because I really liked what I did and I had worked hard to get to the top rank at the university.

#2 Both my arms are better now. My pain levels have gone way down because I am not pushing my body beyond its capacity any more. AND I take time to do the therapy and esp. the stretching every day.

The retirement income is based upon my pension, so it is fairly generous. Basically what they do is take your years of service (in my case 20) and add the years to potential retirement (10) and base then your pension upon 30 years of service (the usual full retirement for teachers). So it becomes basically an early retirement.

Perhaps your husband should look into this? I don't know if he has reached that point in his life but maybe it is something to consider.
