Just call me...

Post by Joy in FL »

... Grace!

On Monday I went in the attic. Not a big deal until I fell through the ceiling! My foot slipped off a beam and down I went. Luckily I did not fall through to the floor. I managed to wrap a leg around a beam to stop from falling to the floor. Of course there is a HUGE hole in our garage ceiling! But we can fix that fairly easy.

My right leg is bruised in several places pretty bad. My pelvic bone and hip hurt like a son of a gun! There are still bruises showing up. I did not go to a doctor. Nothing felt broke.

My concern is my shoulder, yes my BPI shoulder. When I fell I hit it on a beam. I hit the elbow first then my shoulder. Took a chunk out of my elbow. I have to admit that I am a little scared. When I had my accident I did not notice the pain in the shoulder area for about a week. Mostly because the pain in other areas was worse. Once they started to heal the problem in the shoulder became apparent. I have a feeling this might happen again. Right now everything else hurts and the shoulder really is not bothering me. I am really not sure what I will do if it becomes an issue. I am doing everything I normally do when it bothers me... rest, brace, sling, heat, Advil, etc. I am hoping that will work.

Has anyone else hurt themselves badly after their BPI? If so any hints as how to deal with this?

I know it may sound odd but I was almost thankful I had fallen on my BP side. I spend so much time protecting my "good" side that I think I would have been devastated to hurt it. I mean I know I can't depend on my BP side. Yet, I depend on my right side ALL the time. Does that make any sense??

Time for more Advil. :-)

Grace aka Joy

It is hard to fall... just can't hang on and it is normal to protect the healthy side... ya need it!!

I think you should get checked out by a doctor. If you have no feeling on the bpi side you could break or hurt something and not be aware until it swells up...
I know we all hate to go... but falling like this requires some medical attention...

I am glad to see the fall did not injury your great sense of humor Goodnight Gracie...LOL

OH MY GOODNESS, GRACE !!! (I'm sure joy was the farthest thing from your mind). Better get checked out. MAN.....OUCH.......you were lucky. I'd send the dog up next time, and tell him to fetch.....

Honestly Joy......I was cringing as I read your post. I havn't had anything that severe happen yet, just the normal bpi blunders. Yes....keep an eye on that arm.....cause I know sometimes we don't feel everything. More power to ya' Joy......you're one tough gal. Hope the bruising goes away, and you feel better soon. Whew !!!!!

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: January 1980 Yamaha RD200 vs 16 wheeler truck, result, 1 totally paralysed right arm. I was 21, now 54. I had no surgery, I don't regret this. Decided to totally ignore limitations (easily done aged 21) adapted very quickly to one handed life, got married, had 3 kids, worked- the effect of the injury on my life (once the pain stopped being constant) was minimal and now, aged 54, I very rarely even think of it, unless I bash it or it gets cold, then I wish I'd had it amputated :) Except for a steering knob on my car, I have no adaptations to help with life, mainly because I honestly don't think of myself as disabled and the only thing I can't do is peel potatoes, which is definitely a good thing.

I actually broke (or rebroke) my bpi arm once when someone trod on it at a party-it was a good party :0)
I didn't notice til it swelled up. I thought it was just the 'post alcohol' pain. You held onto a beam with your leg!!!! Get on a horse woman, you shouldn't be wasting thigh strength like that!! Can u crack walnuts?

Hey George,

Thanks for asking. I am feeling pretty good actually. The bruises are getting less and less each day. I still feel kind of achy...almost like a pulled muscle, but it is not bad. I am starting to notice some discomfort in my BP side. Not bad, it is the same pain and discomfort I get when I have over done it.

Last week was SO crazy in my house! I fell through the attic on Monday. Spent all of Tuesday and some of Wednesday in bed. Thursday night my son had his Eagle Scout Board of Review...which he passed with flying colors...so we have an Eagle Scout in our family! Friday morning Adam went to court to have his last name legally changed to my husbands, (he will actually adopt him after college, but with my being disabled and Adam's primary financial source he can get grants). Friday afternoon Brian's grandmother was admitted to the hospital with a heart rate of 38!! She has been in ICU since Friday night. They put a pace maker in yesterday. When I saw her today they said she should be moved out of ICU and into a regular room this evening.

:::Sigh:::

So I am not really sure if my shoulder and such are hurting because of the fall OR life being crazy OR all of the above! LOL

LOL Jenny!! My thighs are huge! Even when I was thin I had large thighs... the rest of my body just grew into my thighs! LOL At the point of falling I would have held onto a beam with my teeth if I had been able to sink them into it.

Can't say that I can crack walnuts.... BUT there are some things they come in real handy for! :::wink wink::: LOL
