Lucky?
Lucky?
Hello My brother had an injury in august from a motorcycle accident. He doesn't have pain in his arm but not any movement from the shoulder at all. He CAN move his fingers and has been taking OT and PT three times a week. They have said the EMG showed that the nerves were stretched and not torn so that is a good sign but the doctor has said it will be a year before he gets back what he can. I just was wondering if anyone else has been through this and how they came out? He has had some problems with depression also. I would appreciate any feedback. Thank you.

Re: Lucky?
I can't help you with the details - my little girl has a bpi from birth - so it's quite different. Just wanted to post that we'll be keeping your brother in our thoughts and prayers for a great recovery.
Please wish him well for us,
francine

John,
You left out a few details, and that makes it hard for anyone to respond. It might be that because it's a recent injury, and your not familar with what questions to ask the Dr. Just fyi, my first diagnosis was a stretch, and not a tear. Turned out this was wrong, and I'm trying to schedule surgery now. I don't tell this to scare you, just to make you aware that it's important to see a bpi specialist. You didn't say who the Dr. was, or if he was a bpi specialist.
Anyway, I can tell you that the deltoid muscles are inervated from C5 & C6, only because that's where my injury is. Since C5 is the closest to the top of your shoulder it usually gets jacked first. The Drs. usually wait 4-6 mos. post injury before they consider surgery. It took 5 mos. before my triceps could move against gravity, but every injury is differant.
I hope that your brothers injury is just a stretch, and that he gets a speedy recovery. If that's not the case, definitely start posting hear for more advice. Good luck, Karl.

Re: Lucky?
John try and encourage your brother to seek help with his depression, I know many people who have had this type of injury and a few of them have suffered from post traumatic shock disorder - the symptoms are often associated with depression - if he hasn't already done so, it might be worth suggesting that he seeks professional help - either from a counsellor or other suitably qualified person.
His whole world has gone through a major upset and it will probably take him time to readjust.
He's lucky he's got you to look out for him.
keep us informed of how he's doing.

Re: Lucky?
Hi John
My injury is C5/C6 on both arms, they think a stretch but EMG results aren't conclusive. Its 6 months now since injury and my right arm biceps is good (it always worked against gravity tho), right deltoids kicked in against gravity after about 4 months but they are still weak, am hoping they will strengthen up the next 6 months. Unfortunately left arm is still showing no innervation after 6 months..I think I can see a flicker of a biceps that I am working on but there is nothing in the deltoids. Anyhow I am waiting to see if they will operate on left arm.. am hoping they will. I guess everyone is different. Here is hoping yours kicks in.

For the record as your triceps kicked in around the same time against gravity as my deltoids have. Are your triceps normal now or are they still weak.

Re: Lucky?
John, after my accident in 2001, the doctors told me the same thing. After no signs of recovery in 3-4 months, I had a BPI specialist evaluate me. One of my nerve roots was avulsed without any chance of recovery, and the other one had a neuroma, which had the possiblilty of some recovery. I ended up having nerve graft surgery to try and repair the avulsed nerve root. Since then, I have made some small gains. I wish your brother luck.

Did your neuroma nerve stretch come back okay. Or is the small gains the one on the avulsed nerve.

Re: Lucky?
the nerve with the neuroma has come back but not even close to 100%. The nerve that was grafted has come back some, but much less than the one with the neuroma.
