success after osteotomy

Post by Jazzie »

My daughter (9yrs) just had her first (and hopefully only) surgery 2 weeks ago...an osteotomy. Any comments regarding post op improvements would be great!
thanks...

Jazzie - sounds like things went well - I hope your daughter's recovery goes easily and fast and that you can see the results soon!

Hi. My son, Ben is having an osteotomy on November 7th and I have lots of questions. How much discomfort did your daughter have? Is there anything else you wish you had known before the surgery? Thanks so much. We are going to TCH and this is his fifth surgery (he's almost 7)

I know someone whose daughter had the humeral osteotomy about a year ago. I will see if she will post on the board. I know that they are thrilled with their results!

Ashley just had the osteotomy on the 14th. Post-op pain was brutal for her for about 3-4 days. I have never seen her in so much pain & she's had two surgeries previous to this. I hope that anyone who does this for this child is well prepared for the emotional rollercoaster...cause we weren't. I know she will be incredibly pleased w/ the results as her bpi hand will finally rest in its "normal" position & her elbow will be straight. Not every child will experience this i'm sure & i wish mine hadn't but the pain managemnt at the hospital for this particular surgery was awful...& thats putting it mildly.

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences with the surgery. Because the surgery is in two weeks I'm getting nervous and starting to question our decision to do the osteotomy. YOu helped remind me why it's important to have Ben's arm in a neutral position and it was good to hear that you were all pleased with the results. Me and Ashley do you mind telling me if you had your surgery at Texas Children's? That's where were going. For everyone, WHAT DID YOU TELL YOUR CHILD ABOUT THE PROCEDURE? DID YOU TELL THEM WHAT AN OSTEOTOMY IS?
Thanks,

I took my son for exercises in a heated pool daily for several months after his humeral osteotomy that he had done 17 years ago. I remember telling him he'd be able to get his arm behind his head to do throwins for soccer and a brief outline of what they would do. Not too graphic though, he was excited about being able to do the throw ins so he was happy about having it done. He is now a motor mechanic which would not have been possible without the operation. I am happy he had it done and so is he. Your child will also, I am sure.
