I may be a little naive about this.. but I have never heard of the Shriners Hospitals? And they do BPI? Are they more of a specialist than Texas? Could someone fill me in a little.
I have always known there are "Shriners" (there was a huge group of shriners in my old home town that put on a circus.... ) but never knew what it was all about.
Thanks in advance for the information.

Re: Shriners?
hi Kara - if you go to the shriner's homepage you can read about how it began and the history of the shriners..... www.shriners.com
basically the hospitals are there to help children with orthopedic, burn and spinal cord issues...for free - as long as you agree to being included in research, experimental procedures and studies.
here's the link for Dr. Kozin
http://www.shrinershq.org/shc/philadelphia/kozincv.html
I think if you want to make a comparison between Texas and Shriners, you would have to contact shriners to get their statistics.... how many children have they worked on - what exact types of surgeries have they performed, etc.
TCH statistics are on their website http://www.texaschildrenshospital.org
it's the circus and all their fundraising that helps pay for all the services.... it's quite an organization - they probably have millions of members! and the facilites are beautiful and no one on staff works for free, that's for sure!

Kara,
We went to Texas for Matthew's first two surgeries and went to Shriner's in Phila for his most recent. I just didn't agree with the caps surgery and wanted to see if a better surgery was out there. If we would have waited on the mod quad Dr. Kozin could have performed both surgeries at once saving us a surgery for Matthew. Not all Shriner's have a bpi specialist. I can tell you that I am extremely impressed with the treatment and follow up care we've received so far. The splint construction that Matthew is in is out of this world. In my opinion it surpasses any other he's had before. The therapists that we have worked with this week are outstanding. Dr. Kozin travels all over the world to research and learn about bpi and he sees patients from all over the world as well. If I remember correctly he has an America's #1 or top doctor standing amongst he peers.
At first I felt a little funny about adding a new memeber to Matthew's treatment team but after our experience I'm so glad we did. We feel that Dr. Kozin is the most knowledgeable and informative bpi doc we have seen so far.

I also have to add that statistics may be important to some but unless they are published in peer reviewed journals they by no means can reflect surgical outcomes & success. At times I have really struggled with the whole numbers issue, and I have finally concluded that quantity does not always imply quality. I am not directing this toward any one doctor or institution, nor am I either implying that this is limited to bpi doctors. I just think there are many, many things to research and investigate, and I think numbers can sometimes be a little misleading. Just my thoughts.
