Hi Jacko,
Thanks for your advise. Does it means that even after the reconstruct nerve operation, the pain is still there? My dad has heart problem so I'm worry that the pain might be intolerable for him and cause problem.
The surgeon who is going to do the operation for my dad is a specialist from the National Neuro Science Institute and he is recommended to us by the surgeon who save my dad's life and who operate on the spine for my dad.
Have you undergo any reconstructive surgery? To what extend is your BPI? Do you have this injury for quite some time?
Lastly thanks for your advise and look forward to receive your advise again.
Take-care & all the best.
Regards,
Hwee Yong

Re: NEW INJURY AND SCARED
My husband was in a motorcycle accident 4 weeks ago and is suffering from the same fears and has shooting pains in his arm. The paralysis has been determined permanent by the surgical neurologist (the roots were ripped out of his spine). Right now I feel my job is to learn as much possible about the injury and, although it may not change the determination, to find a doctor specializing in the injury to offer a second opinion either in the Phoenix area where he is recovering or in the Austin, TX area.

Re: NEW INJURY AND SCARED
Does anyone have a type of sling to recommend?? Just recovering from spinal decompression surgery so nothing on the neck will work.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: NEW INJURY AND SCARED
Hello Karen,
The other test that I found to be the most informative, and I believe should be manditory, as to how much damage was done and to what nerves exactly, was the Myelogram & a CT Myelogram. It's best for determining if nerve roots are avulsed or not and if rootlets are available for grafting.
It's done by injecting at least 10cc of dye into your spinal cord and inverting the body on a special tilting table, so the dye flows down towards the head and out of the areas that have been torn, such as the nerve rootlets. Unfortunately though, the best way of determining the total extent of nerve damage is through exploratory surgery and that's not usually done until you've settled on the doctor that will be performing a corrective surgery. I wish you could have exploratory surgery done before you chose a doctor so you can better way your options out as to what specifically will be done during surgery.
Karen, you should DEMAND to have this test done, along with the an extensive EMG to get the best idea of how much damage was done to assist you in your plans to have surgery or not. I wish you the best of luck.
