what time zone is the message board in?
whenever I look at the general message board, there are a lot of messages that are dated the next day (in the future?) at around 3 am, ect.- where does the date/time stamp come from?

ok, I looked again & now they look normal. what's going on?

You set the time zone yourself.
When you are logged in, it reflects whatever time zone you have selected.
To set your zone and other preferences (like number of messages that show up on a page), you can go to the upper right corner of the screen, where it says 'Welcome'. One of the choices there is "your settings/profile". Click on that and then follow the directions.
Getting weird times on posts is an indication that one is not signed in, it's how I usually notice I'm not signed in myself!
