Re: I need HELP? do babys and children ware BRACES ALL DAY?
Well there are a number of different kind of braces....
if a baby has a severe waiter's tip contracture then they might be advised to wear it during the day for a little while... they will definitely wear it at night while they are asleep. The therapist will keep on adjusting the brace as the contracture gets better and then that'll be it when the wrist is at neutral.
For biceps contracture - many wear a extension splint or a dynamic splint- but that is done at night when the arm is at rest (approx. 6 months)
Post surgical immobilizers / splints / braces / casts - they are worn as per the protocol of the clinic - some time will be 24/7 and some time will be just at night as the arm gets stronger.... but that's just a termporary time period....
We are about to start using a soft brace which Maia will wear as a safety brace while her shoulder heals (once it is out of her post surgical splint) - and Dr. nath said that it is short term - about 3 months - as well. (http://www.arkpcb.com)
And then there are the support braces that are used just for weight bearing, etc. - which you put on for weight bearing and take off when the task is finished - minutes later.
You can look at all that I am talking about here:

Looking back at Maia's history....
(1) 3 months - resting wrist splint with 4 modifications - 1 month full time 3 more months nighttime
(2) supinator strap - 2 weeks at night - she would rip it off so we stopped fighting it
(3) primary immobilizer - 4 weeks post surgery 24/7 and maybe some more at night (I forgot)
(4) biceps flexion splint - 1 hour per day to keep hand at her middle area so that her eye could see her hand and remember that she had a hand
(5) secondary splint - 8 weeks 24/7 8 weeks nighttime - post surgical
(6) static elbow extension splint - 3 months nighttime only (didn't work)
(7) dynasplint - 6 months nighttime only
(8) Pedi-wrap - for weight bearing support only
(9) capsulodesis splint - 8 weeks 24/7 8 weeks nightttime post surgical
(10) air splint - for weight bearing support only
(11) ultraflex splint - 6 months nighttime only
(12) capsulodesis/biceps splint - 8 weeks 24/7 8 weeks nighttime post surgical
(13) David brace - daytime only for safety for 2-3 months post surgical splint
(14) possible lightweight static splint for elbow extension - to be decided
haha wow - that's impressive! haha never spelled it out just like this before - I guess she's had a lot of splints eh? But the majority of this all happened at night.

When I was a little I wore a splint and It was put up above my head I wore it at night only I just Remember how much it hurt thats why I couldnt belive it was still used .I know why a splint is needed after surgery, but putting a arm in a position of pain thats what I dont get my mom finaily took the brace of me she didnt want me in so much pain this was In the 50s.so now Iam learning something more thanks. The all day Idea was what got me if It was a point of sreaching you would think holdind a light weight would do that to.you put the arm in a splint to me it just becomes stiff and then do theopy I now theopy did more for me than the splint did.I have records from birth that my elbow was fracture at birth my arm is bent all my life does the splints now streatin the arm for kids?

being bent from a fracture is different... the kids get biceps tendon contractures - shortening of the muscle and tendon....
yes the splints can work IF the muscle imbalance is taken care of at the same time but that's the biggest catch 22 there is... even if you have surgery to straighten it out, it's not guaranteed if there's still a difference in strength with the opposing muscle.... it's like a big race and unfortunately maia is about to enter it when re de-splint her in 2 weeks. Her biceps tendon was lengthened and now we have to work hard at strengthening the triceps.
