If your splint cracks and it's the middle of the night....

Post by francine »

you can fix it (depending on the placement of the crack and all) without even taking the splint off....by using either a really hot blow dryer or by putting a very hot compress on it to remelt it and remold the cracked area together with your fingers. Had I known this last night, I might have slept better!!! lol lol Just sharing...

That must have been so scarey. I'm glad it seems that you've gotten everything taken care of now. Please write to me and tell me more. Yikes! What a rough night I'm sure. -T

Oh, that really stinks, doesn't it!! Mitchell's airplane splint broke (the bar that holds the arm out) when he was RUNNING and FELL! We duck-taped that son of a gun up and went to urgent care (they were of NO help). They wanted to re-cast him. I kept saying NO He didn't have his surgery here!! You know nothing about him! I just want you to re-attach his splint! We ended up driving to Minneapolis the next day to have his splint fixed properly. Yup, live and learn.

Ha! I am glad that didn't happen to us. Katie seems to have a growth spurt with each of her surgeries and I had to put it in a warm tub of water and mold it to her again just to get her back in right during those last few weeks of mod. Then as soon as she was out full time she dropped 5 pounds. Go figure. Glad you got it taken care of Francine.

How is it going by the way? Katie is still not up to the 12 hours yet. She just doesn't seem to be ready. I am going to ask Dr. Nath and see what he thinks..I will let you know. Althouhg, Maia is still at the stage of get this thing off of me more than likely. I don't think Katie can make up her mind. She acts more like her mother every day.

well - she's dropped the angry tone - GET THIS THING OFF ME and she's shifted to deep stares/glares and soft voices "Is my arm strong enough yet?" which is way harder to take if you ask me.

I knew that I could mold it in hot water because when I sat her in the baby bathtub and the bottom got wet it also really loosened up. I just didn't know if it could melt back into a crack and have it be sufficient holding power and it is able to do that.

Feb 4th Feb 4th Feb 4th Feb 4th

is it FEb 4th yet?

Tina - well I heard today in school that she clobbered her teacher (by accident) - they collided so the teacher thinks that's when it might have cracked. But quite honestly we have no choice but to bend it now and then a little tiny bit just to get into the carseat so...maybe that caused the original start of the weakness.

We have to maneuver Katie too. Forunately she is still small enough that we tilt her into the right side first and then buckle her up.

The soft voices and big eyes take the cake when it comes to the heartstrings I will give them that. And the silent tears and Ok I sorry is the pits.

Feb 4 soon! Tylenol and two hours later Katie was screaming at us and smacking her arm, then holding it up in splint position. I don't know how the heck I am going to get her to 12 hours at this rate. But she feels better in the tub. Hey! She got chill bumps last night when we took her out of the tub. First time that we have noticed. It took her forever to grow hair on her arm and it just stood up nicely last night. Erector pilli--does anyone know how this is related to the injury? Katie has had such diminished sensation for so long but I think this has to mean something is healing. How long do they continue to get recovery from primary? And has anyone else noticed the increased wrist weakness after the caps? After mod she got a lot of recovery in extension / flexion but right now she is just wrist drop and her hand looks like a prosthesis sort of--thumb pinching to the rest of the cupped fingers to do anything. Right around the time she had the caps she was starting to spread her fingers apart but that has gone by the wayside.

Also, Katie keeps breaking out with viral skin issues (molluscum contagiousum, viral warts) after each surgery. Her ped said it is stress related to the surgeries and I wondered if any of the other kids had similar (or different issues) that came up routinely like that after surgeries?

thanks

I don't know about the caps surgery..... but TJ still has issues with warts/mollusks on his back and shoulder- we just keep treating them- they were so bad at one point the ped burned some off- TJ was not a happy camper, they seem to have stopped no and we're nearly 1 year post secondary.

How old is he? I can't get Katie's ped to do anything to them, he says she is too young yet and he doesn't want to burn them off. I know that you can apply a nightly strip of "scotch" tape and that is supposed to kill them off but he feels that would break her out from the tape and that they will eventually go away. They seem to be spreadig to me..

Where did you go for surgery? Katie sees Dr. Laurent, Nath, Nelson and Shenaq for her surgeries at TCH. Makes me feel better knowing it isn't just her then, even though I wish it weren't any of them.

What other treatment methods are you using?

Thanks
