migraine and obpi

Post by Janny-scotland »

hi all,
does anyone know of a direct link between migraine headaches and erbs? since the winter set in ive been having migraines daily (normally only get them if im pregnant...and im definately not!! lol) My neck has been SO stiff with the cold weather and im not sure if this has been causing the headaches or not? has anyone else had the same problem?
i start another course of physio next week so im hoping the p.t. will have some answers

One other thing...my 6 year old has started walking around with her arm held like mine(quite oblivious to the fact shes doing it)...anyone else had this prob? should i discourage her or should i ignore it and hope she stops doing it of her own accord?
any feedback on either of these issues would be greatly appreciated!

Take care,
janny

Well, I'm 48 year old OBPI. I get ocular migraines that cause dizziness, nausea,, and double vision. also a lot of neck and shoulder spasms. I'm not sure if it is the Erb's or the arthritis that is secondary to the Erb's. There just has not been enough research that has been done for us adults. If you've read the old posts, most of us in our 40' and 50's have al experienced a multitude of overuse problems like arthritis, carpal tunnel, muscle spasms, scoliosis---well, I could go on and on. I have fibromyalgia and a lot of us have that too. I wish I knew how to go about getting some kind of grant for a good neuro dept. to research adult OBPI after effects. Anyone have a clue where to begin????? Pat

Janny,
My daughter did the same thing. She is 9 now and does not do it as much. I think it is a learned behavior. I have told her that her arm is o.k. .She also has problems with muscle tone. Yes, I have migraines also. Maybe it could be a connection.

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: January 1980 Yamaha RD200 vs 16 wheeler truck, result, 1 totally paralysed right arm. I was 21, now 54. I had no surgery, I don't regret this. Decided to totally ignore limitations (easily done aged 21) adapted very quickly to one handed life, got married, had 3 kids, worked- the effect of the injury on my life (once the pain stopped being constant) was minimal and now, aged 54, I very rarely even think of it, unless I bash it or it gets cold, then I wish I'd had it amputated :) Except for a steering knob on my car, I have no adaptations to help with life, mainly because I honestly don't think of myself as disabled and the only thing I can't do is peel potatoes, which is definitely a good thing.

hi janny, i have a tbpi but i had it long before my children were born and like your daughter, both my girls went thru phases of having a pretend bpi, sometimes consciously, sometimes not. my eldest was thrilled to bits when she broke her arm and really couldn't use it! i think it's just an extension of 'being mummy' behaviour like wearing high heels etc. my son didn't do it but he wanders about sometimes saying 'i'm a broken man' just like his father!

I just wanted to throw my two cents in here.. for the sake of encouragement. My daughter used to like to pretend to put in Contact Lenses like Daddy. I think it is a way to help them identify with the situation. We just kept telling her that she didn't need them since her eyes were fine. But we tried to not make it a big deal.

All three of my children clapped hands backwards...LOL..... you know right bpi hand finger to wrist of the left hand and elbow out...LOL....
All of my nieces and nephews did to and use to move their arms like me... It is imitation .... I explained to the kids they did not have to do that because they were just watching me but their arms moved the way they were suppose to...
The kids never really realized that I was different until someone else asked what was wrong with their Mom... LOL.... now my grandchildren did the same thing.... its ok... the kids look at us and learn to smile and make silly faces why not use their arms like us too... they get over it.... It just because your 6 year old wants to be just like you...

Migranes, "tired" eyes, stiff neck, ear ringing, some back pain. Related to Erbs, who knows? As another post said, not enough research going on for adults.

Cold weather does not help. Thank God this winter has been mild so far.

Wow, what an interesting thought. I get migraines too. I guess I never thought there was a connection really, my dad used to get them and women are more likely to get them. So my chances were higher to begin with. But it would be interesting to find out if there is a connection.
I does seem that my worst month for migraines is December. I am on meds for them they got so bad.
Let me know if you find out more on a connection, since the wiring in the brain is so close and stuff.

I know of two people who go to a chiropractor and they have not had a migraine since. Food for thought.
