Re: New BP mom
Smokey,
You've come to the right place for support and info.
I see you've already gotten quite a bit of both.
Please do not "wait" for a year to get your daughter evaluated by a BPI specialist. Is she in physical therapy now, at least 1x per week?
All the best and keep us posted!

Re: New BP mom
Please, please do not wait till the baby in one to do anything. My son started recieving therapy at 3 weeks old, had his first surgery when he was 7 months. The earlier the better as Francine, peggy and everyone else says.....you are in a great place since the San Diego Support is one of the best......as I have said before.....they are all willing to help and helped me and my family during that very trying first year !

Re: New BP mom
Hi I'm Cindy mom to Melanie (almost 4) and Matthew (2) both right bpi. Melanie was diagnosed as recovered by 9 weeks and Matthew is still on the road to recovery.
We have had Matthew involved in a variety of treatments including physical and occupational therapy, acupuncutre, chiropractic, reiki energy, myo-fascial release, and reflexology. Before we started acupuncture Matthew had no movement. He was four months old when he first went. By the time he went for his surgery he could move his hand and wrist and parts of his arm. When the docs were operating on him and saw he had a total plexus injury they were amazed at the recovery he had. If you're open to them there are quite a few things you could try before surgery.
Every child and recovery is different, I know people who have waited to have surgery then ended up being turned away. They stayed in contact with the surgeons up until the end to make sure the no surgery decision was ok.
We have always gotten a few opinions on surgery from vairous docs, it helps us in the decision process.
Good luck on your journey and welcome aboard.

Thanks to all of you from my husband and me (smokey and B.V.) You are all so helpful. So much to think about and consider. I must say that for all that some of you have been through, I just offer up prayers to you, your children and families. You seem to be very giving, caring people while your'e still going through struggles yourselves. I'm thankful for sites like this to turn to for help. I'll keep you updated on our next steps and our daughter's progress.

Re: New BP mom
I agree with what everyone says about therapy...dont wait, go now for some profesisonal PT or OT or at least aquaint yourself with the concepts behind therapies
and to let you also know there are plenty of children with excellant recovery also, without surgery...we are sooooooooooooooooooo glad we waited untill 7-8 mos before rushing into surgery, My son is 4 1/2 with no surgeries to date, Most of the BPI "specialists" are surgeons, so...ummmm, just keep that in mind.
not trying to bend you one way or theother, just want to let you know there are plenty of kids receoverying equally as well without surgery as many injurites are different, and your baby's movement and function sound very promising, blessing blossoms and WELCOME

Hi shannon. I'm from Fullerton. how about you? I was recently informed that my daughter qualifies for CCS. Do you know anything about this program in California? BV
