Coat for baby for primary surgery in winter...

Post by francine »

LL Bean currently is having a sale on those fleece baby bags (that are now made with separate legs to accomodate car seats). They are on sale for $19.95. Don't know how long it will last.

I hate to be a party pooper but as the car seat gal that I am I feel I must put my two cents in here!!
And I think this is info everyone can use especially since it is winter. Anyway... It is recommend that you not use Coats in car seats for any child (or adults for that matter). The harness (or seatbeat depeding on the type of seat you are using) should be as close to the body as possible. When you add a coat (especially the big warm kinds that we wear in the winter) it brings in a factor we call compression (this occurs in a crash). The fluffy warm stuff in the coat will be compressed in a crash and the harness will then be looser than where you orginially started with it at. A loose harness will allow for more body movement to occur which leads to a greater chance of injury! We usually tell parents to warm the car before getting in... or put a blanket over the kids... or put the coat on your kids backwards!

I hope I am making sense! If anyone has questions please feel free to e-mail me. I am actually trained in Car Seat Saftey. I took a 5 day course and have had to take tests every year to keep my Certification (certifed through AAA). The classes are set up thorugh NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Saftey Administration). I only bring all of that up because most people can't believe that there is an actual course to learn how to put in a car seat!

Happy And Safe driving!

But the coats would be good for other outdoor use!! Since it has gotten mighty cold here I looked into it but I talked myself out of it since I have plenty of stuff for my boy!

Thanks, Kristie, for sharing this information. I have never heard that about the coats. Wow! That's a scarey thought. Thank you also for sharing your credentials. I knew there was a course in car seat safety b/c whenever we get a new car seat, we have one of our local police officers (who are well-trained in the course & certified) come check it out to make sure it's installed properly. I did not know that you had taken a course though and been certified. Good for you! Car seats are a serious topic for me and it really gets to me when people don't use them properly. Take care. -Tina
