Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: 6/12/10 avulsion of several roots due to motorcycle accident. So far I've
had two nerve transfers: intercostal to biceps and spinal accessory to
superscapular. The superscapular is working, holding my shoulder in place so I don't have to wear a sling all the time, and I can 'lift' that arm a few degrees away from my body. The bicep is firing but not enough to flex, yet.

24 Hours of Lemons

If anyone isn't familiar... Google it.

I have been increasingly interested in putting together a team, 6 of my best friends from high school -including my shop teacher - have put together 4 seperate teams:

Just watching has been a blast, but I want to get involved. If I do, though, I want a team of sympathetic BPI and/or amputees to do it with. Is anyone interested? I'm currently based in the Tahoe (CA) area but relocating to Phoenix, AZ. I want 5 other people who want to contribute (cash can substitute for wrench-turning) and drive, and really as many other interested curious people to help build car, pit crew, hang out and drink beer, whatever. The whole point of this whole race is fun.

...but I'm pretty sure we get organizer's choice trophy if 6 people with one arm apiece show up with a working car and turn even a single lap.

Hi Brian,

Looks pretty fun and funny. You could totally do an entire theme on the one arm thing. How often do they do these races and what part of the country?

There are a few brachial plexus FaceBook group, including one for UBPN. You might want to post there as well as search out some arm amputee groups to get a group together.

Hope all is well with you, probably been two years since we spoke, sling still working for you?

Dan,
The sling is working great, thanks! I was playing soccer 1-2 days a week all through grad school so I've been getting a lot of use out of it. The lack of snow this winter, combined with grad-school-induced poverty, means I only got out for a couple days of snowboarding. Of course it's snowing now, and I'm out in Arizona where it's 90 degrees... oh well.

The lemons races are run all over the country, but they do about 2/year in California and Arizona, seems like they're alternating between Buttonwillow (Central Valley), Sears Point (Sonoma), and Chuckwalla (CA/AZ border).

One thing I think I neglected to mention is that you don't need any experience racing AT ALL to drive. They encourage rank novices to get out on track and see what they can do.

Sounds like a lot of fun! I truly hope you follow through with your goal!

I live in New England, State of Maine.

I use to be on the pit crew for my younger brother. He raced Super Sport cars. I know The Lemon Races...Lots of Fun!

Once again...have fun with you venture!
