"Fun Fact: I can't lift my left arm higher than this.
Lol ok so not so fun actually. No, it's not a birth defect. It's actually an injury caused by my doctor during my delivery. My shoulder became stuck on my mom's pelvic bone and the doctor used so much force twisting my head and neck that it stretched the nerves leading from my spinal cord to my arm. This is called a Brachial Plexus Injury or Erb's Palsy. Most people have never heard of it but more children suffer from brachial plexus injuries sustained at birth than Down Syndrome or Muscular Dystrophy. It's BPI Awareness Week so I thought I'd share. If you are pregnant or know someone who is, here are some risk factors and prevention tips http://ubpn.org/index.php?option=co ... Itemid=108.
If you are ever curious or want to know anything about it, just ask me. I only charge $5."
I wanted to put up a quick little statement about the injury to raise awareness and educate a few of my friends browsing Facebook instead of studying. However, I was blown away by the response! 130 people "liked" it meaning that at least that many took the time to read what I had to say about the injury. There were also lots of sincere questions and comments from people genuinely interested in learning more. I was touched that so many people would show that kind of support and really excited that they all know something about the injury now. I was initially a little self conscious about even putting the picture up. I don't necessarily hide my injury, but I'm not one to get attention from it either so I felt like I was putting myself out there. It was pretty uplifting to receive such a positive reaction.
Anyway, I was really happy about it, and I thought some of you guys would be too so I thought I'd share a little positivity
