BPI is a preventable injury. However, many Doctor's use the improper technique for birthing. BPI is both a physical and mental health issue. Nerve damage, bone misalignment, and the inability to use the injured area affects our mental health. Because our arm(s) are BPI, we find the easiest of tasks are the most time consuming and frustrating. For myself, I am a person with OBPI. I live with this injury everyday. Some people stare. Some make fun of my arm, and call me names. Of course, this affects my confidence, ego, and outlook on life. I ask myself, what if I had two good arms? Then, reality fades back into my life.
So, I started to understand that I have more abilities than disabilities. And, I began my P.M.A. Positive Mental Attitude. With counseling, play therapy, and a lot of soul searching, I found many hobbies, games, sports, and abilities. I took a positive approach in daily life. I made people laugh with my dry humor. I adopted three cats. I finished college. These are a few of my abilities...I have a vast amount. The reason? PMA. If one can not do something, adapt so you can. Never say never. Yes, everyday is a BPI day. But, only oneself can choose between smiling or frowning. Being happy is free. Like oneself for whom they are...a human being.
