Car modifications

Post by Cara »

I was reading in another thread about modifications for cars. Granted it will be a few years before my daughter is old enough to drive, but i hanted really thought about what kind of modifications she would need for a car. She has LOBPI. What type of modifications have you all found helpful and how did you go about getting the modifications made?

i lost the use of my left arm/hand and drove my car just fine without any modifications. if it is the right hand/arm, you might have the gear shifter and ignition modified, but other than that, she should be fine. i have a friend who was born without a left hand. she has never had any modifications on her car at all. but everyone is different...for modifications, you can google automobile modifications.

I never used any modifications until I was 40. Now I use a suicide knob which helps my "good " arm with turns. I know that LBI have a problem with tolls. Now most states have a electronics passes for tolls.

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: LOBPI. I am 77 yrs old and never had a name for my injuries until 2004 when I found UBPN at age 66.

My injuries are: LOBPI on upper body and Cerebrael Palsy on the lower left extremities. The only intervention I've had is a tendon transplant from my left leg to my left foot to enable flexing t age 24 in 1962. Before that, my foot would freeze without notice on the side when wearing heels AND I always did wear them at work "to fit in" I also stuttered until around age 18-19...just outgrew it...no therapy for it. Also suffered from very very low self esteem; severe Depression and Anxiety attacks started at menopause. I stuffed emotions and over-compensated in every thing I did to "fit in" and be "invisible". My injuries were Never addressed or talked about until age 66. I am a late bloomer!!!!!

I welcome any and all questions about "My Journey".

Cara, with my LOBPI, I never had need for modifications, however,I have to make sure gear shift and emergency brakes are all on my RIGHT;I have been able to adjust and use my right hand for lights on the left and window wiper's control if it was on the left. some cars had lights and wiper's on the left but THIS my LAST car only lights and window controls are on the left so I do these when stopped at a light if not turned on before driving out of parking gear.

HUGGZ all around--- & Miss Rosalynn will figure out what is best for her during Driver's ED. I suggest asking her instructor to take her for her driving test. That cut thru alot of stupid questions for me.

LOBPI/73+

Ps... In the "olden days" my parents didn't let me take lessons until I was 22 & was a graduation from College present. Please don't make Rosalynn wait that long.

Hi,
There is ways to learn to drive a car as you have read by adapting , spinner knobs , automatic transmissions. There are other things like a cross over bar that attaches to the turn signal. Having electric seats are Great to angle a position to hold the bottom of the steering wheel with the affected hand. I drove semi with my birth erbs and the air seat(standard on semis) help me alot because the seat would go up so I could reach the steering wheel to hold on to when shifting it work because I have left erbs  I increase my grasp from little by squeezing a rubber ball, If you can increase grasp???? it goes a long way in what you can do  :D It is amazing what you can find ways to adapt to in-spite of limitation you end up with in a life time :D I am in AW!! what other find a way to do here and post :D
Best Trys,
Tom
