HELLO PETER,
I'VE HAD MY INJURY FOR 9MONTHS NOW AND EVEN THOUGH I STILL HAVE PAIN,ABOUT 3 MONTHS AGO I DECIDED TO STOP TAKING ANY DOCTOR PRESCRIBED MEDS MAINLY BECAUSE OF WHAT THEY DO TO THE LIVER AND KIDNEYS.DEALING WITH THIS INJURY IS HARD ENOUGH AND TO THINK THAT THE MEDICATION THAT IS SUPPOSED TO HELP CAN CAUSE ME MORE DAMAGE IN THE FUTURE WAS ENOUGH TO MAKE ME STOP.IT'S NOT EASY THOUGH,EVEN AS I WRITE THIS POST I AM IN PAIN,THERE ARE SOME NATURAL PAIN KILLERS THAT DON'T HAVE THE SAME EFFECTS AS THE DRUGS FROM THE DOCTORS AND THEY DO WORK.TRY YOUR LOCAL HEALTH STORE OR A NATURAL HERB STORE,I'M IN CALIFORNIA SO WE HAVE ALOT OUT HERE.I UNDERSTAND HOW YOU FEEL,HAVING THIS INJURY CAN MAKE THE FUTURE LOOK PRETTY BLEEK,I WAS JUST GETTING TO A PLACE WHERE THINGS WERE LOOKING PRETTY GOOD FOR ME AND I HAD A LOT GOING.WELL GOOD LUCK WITH EVERYTHING.

Thanks for the responses!
Yes, that's what I'm concerned about as well, I've managed to cut down approx.10% in the last week; if gradually reduce I may have a better chance of eliminating the pain meds.
I am taking 40mg t.i.d Oxycontin and 10 mg Oxycodone (Percoset) (previously t.i.d before I cut back) What are the long term risk of pain meds to liver and kidney? I already have lower testosterone and am taking supplements for that. I was not able to have relations (I sound like a old lady)
Also, thanks for the encouragement Diver Tom

I' ve been living with my injury since 1968. Depression comes with the territory. Dealing with pain is a never ending battle. What bothers me the most is that young people do not have health insurance. I didn't either when I had my injury. So I understand what it is like to
wonder how & what can you do.

Your husband needs some type of talk therapy to deal with the depression. He needs a way to control the pain he feels. Currently I'm taking a drug that helps depression, Cymbalta.
Cymbalta can also lessen pain. As a result I feel better and have less sever pain .

Heidi, I am on here for the same reasons. I had a two year old and 3 month onld when my husband has his accident. Please don't give up. I have been going strong since Sept. 30th, 2009. We had to get FL Medicaid to help with the expenses when he lost his employer benefits after the accident. Luckily, we have found Doctors here in Miami to help and his major surgeries are in St. Louis, MO with Dr. Thomas Tung who works in Susan MacKinnons office. THey are extemely highly regarded in their community. If you need any help or advice finding Dr. or help please feel free to contact me. I know he will want to amputate and get it over and done with but there are so many other options. Personally, we have been able to see, after lots of pain and hurt, that some positive has come out of this, we have learned to enjoy our children and spend more time with them and definately it has made our relationship stronger. Sometimes, you have to just set your mind and ignore when they get angry. When people try and baby my husband I tell them he has two arms, at first they thought I was mean, but over time he does mostly everything on his own, even change diapers, and giving him his independence was the best thing we did for him and our relationship. He does have two arms and hopefully they will both work soon.
