Armstrong,
Your accident and injuries sound similar to mine. For me the deltoid never came back. My doc felt a slight flicker in my bicep after about two months. After about 6 I could use the elbow fairly well. After about a year, I had pretty good use. You learn to cope and deal. Chopping it off is not necessary in my case. I never lost any tricep in the first place, and after strengthening the bi, those muscles help support the shoulder even without the delt.

You go back and forth with the emotional stuff, and I can't say thats ever totally gone away but at some point you know that as far as this injury goes, it just is what it is and you make the best of it. I tell you though that exercising it, stretching a little, and lyrica for the nerve pain are what help me. I have an olympic curl bar that i now lift with 10 lb plates on it. Helps my bicep alot. when it comes back, start lifting whatever you can and use your good arm to help. After I first had the injury, I couldn't lift a piece of paper.

Oh and if you have access to a pool, that helps me to get in and move the arm a little.

I agree keep your ROM good and exercise it. I am not able to lift weights but found that exercise bands have helped a lot. My rear deltoid never came back but by exercising my other muscles my arm almost sits back up in its socket. Just don't give up.
