- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: My son Benjamin was diagnosed with OBPI at birth. He recently underwent a Nerve transfer surgery at 10 months of age. He is a patient of Dr.Howard Clarke at Toronto Sick Children's Hospital
Physio Therapy
My son Benjamin had a nerve transfer surgery done on December 16th 2010. When we went in for his last check up, I asked his therapist if our appointment schedule would be changing. I had assumed that we would be starting to intensify his therapy instead of just coming in to monitor his ROM. Right now he sees her every 3 weeks. She said after he turns a year that we will be seeing her every 6 months and in time once a year. Ummm I guess my question is Should he not be seeing someone more regularly for therapy and to work on specific issues???
Re: Physio Therapy
I think you need to talk to the surgeon. He/she is the one who writes the orders for how much pt/ot is necessary. And yes, I would push for more.
You can do stuff at home while you are waiting for this to change. Toys that encourage reaching (the bar that they lie under and swipe at), toys that have different feeling to them (fisher-price has some new blocks that have different stuff on the outside and rattle and have animals and stuff inside --hey, my kid is 11+ haven't been in a toy store in a while!) and you could and should do sensory stuff with ball pits, puppets that you make out of different fabrics that your rub on the arms and legs to increase sensory development.
But, I think it's time for a conversation with the surgeon about increasing therapy.

I would definitely contact your surgeon! This doesn't sound right to me!!
When Aubree had her nerve surgery, we were out of therapy for a little while for healing purposes (can't remember the exact amount of time), but then started back up again at two to three times a week.

Hi,
My daughter is 8 months old at 4 months she had nerve graft surgery. She recieves PT 3x a week, she also gets scar massage (the nerves were taken from her calves). If the surgery they are talking about in the future is nerve there is only a small window for optium results, if you haven't gotten other opinions get them each injury is different and you have to feel confident with all your health care providers. My daughters OBPI is severe so I have had to really educate myself. Your sons may not be so severe but if you don't think someone is doing enough you are probally right. Below are some resources that may be able to help you.
Theres a program in FL called Early Steps and another called Childrens Medical Services this program pays for PT once a week There are no income requirements your son will just need to be evaluated. I believe that this program exists in most States. To find out if something like this exists in your area contact your pediatrician. Your pediatrician can also order additional PT. You can also contact the hospital where your son was born, most hospitals have someone on staff like a social worker or patient advocate, that can let you know what types of programs are available.
Hope this helps
