Mayo Clinic in Florida

Hi everyone, I am a longtime viewer of the board but have never posted before. I am the mother of a 19yr old son who has never had surgery before on his left OBPI. Drs were clueless when my son was born 19 years ago in Orlando. He has seen Dr. Nath a few times as well at outreaches. In his latest visit it was recommended that he have mod quad and triangle tilt. He is now mentally ready to have the surgery now and he is starting to have some pain now which he never had. He has really good use of the arm as we always had physical therapy done each summer. But I think he is ready because the left arm is shorter, it bothers him and the lack of supination and reach bothers him as well.As we are viewing our options for insurance, has anyone had any experience with the mayo clinic in Jacksonville Florida as they are covered by our insurance? I definately want someone that is experienced but I also have to view my options for insurance as well. You may email me directly if you are more comfortable with that @ clintglo@aol.com. When I was referred to Mayo after a motorcycle accident in May 2007, it was my understanding that Rochesters Mayo clinic had the only Brachial Plexus team........I have the direct phone numbers if you need them. I also think you would get an appointment quicker if referred by another physician....not certain though.

Yes, they said they have a Dr. Peter Murray who does BPI injuries but I've never heard of him. Plus I was a little concerned when they said we could get an appointment within the week. Sounds like he's not very busy!!! I definately must do my due dilegence. I would love to hear from all the Floridians, specifically central Floridians, and find out who they are using.

My daughter is only 5 months and I plan on taking her to see Dr. Grossman in Miami. He seems like he truly knows what he is dealing with when it comes to this condition. The only problem is that Miami is 6 hours away.

This is a late post but I have a 3 month old with a very severe brachial plexus injury. I have seen numerous doctors, here are my comments about the dr you are talking about. Dr. Murray only sees children for a half day once a month, you may have been able to get in with him quickly because it was close to that day. I liked him very much and have scheduled surgery with him-but until the surgery date comes I have kept my options open and still educate myself. I am still seeking other opinions. My feelings regarding Dr. Murray is that he is an employee of the hospital and therefore salaried, so he makes the same amount whether he markets himself or not. Also the Mayo hospital in MN is well known for brachial plexus and I can't imagine that the hospital would have someone not compentant in this surgery be the go to person in Fl. Any information about Dr. Murray would be appreciated. I have gotten at least 6 opinions so far.

MY DAUGHTER WAS A PATIENT OF DR. MURRAY SINCE THE AGE OF 1. SHE IS NOW 3 YEARS OLD. SHE WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE SURGERY IN 2009, A LAT MUSCLE TRANSFER. SHE HAS YET TO HAVE THE SURGERY. THE REASON IS BECAUSE HE ONLY OPERATES ON CHILDREN 1 DAY MONTH. HE SEES BOTH CHILDREN AND ADULTS. I FINALLY GOT FED UP AND SHE IS GOING TO HAVE SURGERY ON OCT 18 WITH DR. KOZIN IN PHILADELPHIA. DR. MURRAY ACTUALLY CONSULTED DR. KOZIN AND DR. WATERS IS BOSTON CONCERNING MY DAUGHTER.
WE LIKED DR. MURRAY BUT HE JUST DID NOT HAVE TIME FOR MY DAUGHTER. SO WE SOUGHT HELP ELSEWHERE. WE ARE REALLY HAPPY WITH DR. KOZIN AND SHRINERS. I BELIEVE THIS IS WHERE THE LORD WANTED US TO GO.
