I found this website as I was looking for an athletic sling the Mayo doctors recommended.
I just got off the phone with Dan (he's having custom slings made for athletes). He was very upbeat and promising on the phone...it was good to talk to someone that understands my situation.
Overall I'm handling the situation well. Emotionally I cycled through the bulk of the bad stuff early on. I was in the hospital nearly two weeks and would have likely died had I not been wearing full motorcycle gear. I hit a contractor's trailer as he was pulling out onto the highway. At this point aside from my bad arm/shoulder I feel pretty good.
My family, friends, and employer have been very supportive. At this point I just want my life back. I am scheduled for nerve graft surgery next month...wish me luck! I am sure I will be on this board quite a bit in the next few years as I work through recovery.
I have read some recent posts...there is a very helpful group of people here! Nice to meet you all!

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: i got in a bad motorcycle accident. i tore the astery in my arm and had emergency surgery to save my left arm. i am having reconstructive surgery in august. my arm is completely immobile with zero function below my shoulder. the accident was may 6th, 2010.

Hey, welcome to the site. I was in a motorcycle accident to a few years back (as were a lot of us here). You sound like you have a super positive attitude - especially so soon after your accident, and that really is what will help you the most in the coming years 
Good luck with your upcoming surgery and I hope you get great results. The Mayo doctors are a fantastic group and know how to talk TO people, not just talk AT them.
If you have shoulder issues, I suggest you ask about seeing Dr. Elhassan at the mayo clinic. He is part of the brachial plexus team there and can do surgical techmiques on a brachial plexus injury to the shoulder that no other doctor in the world can do. He is giving me my before and after videos and I will post them as soon as I get them.

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: May 24, 2008 an 88 year old lady did not see me and pulled out while I was riding my 06 HD Street Glide. The accident resulted in 9 broken bones and brain hemorrhaging. The accident's most serious results was two avulsions confirmed in my C6 & C7 vertebrae. In Oct of 08 Dr. Li of Wake Forest University performed nerve transfer lasting around 8 hours in surgery. I have limited use now of my left arm. It took until July of 09 before it moved at all, and now is moving limited. I experience burning pain in my left hand, staying busy helps keep the mind off of burning. I visited the Mayo Clinic May, 2010 and consulted with their brachial plexus team. May 1, 2012, I underwent a muscle transfer at Wake Forest University. This surgery was deemed a success and I have more movement in my arm.

Welcome to the sight, I wish you much luck in your upcoming nerve graft surgery. I had mine over a year ago and my arm started to flex and move 8 months after the surgery. I know I will never have full strength with my arm, but I do have some use of it now. I am thankful. Good luck!
