Hi, I'm new here, my husband (26) had a motorcycle accident on 9/30/2009...we are trying to get in ASAP to the Mayo Clinic and I have a few question:
Were do you all stay when you go to Minnesotta (we are from Miami, FL)?
Dr. said not to expect great results, when they mention movement/results it's not a great deal, what have you seen?
Have any of you been withdrawn...see my husband a little withdrawn?
Can you hug your kids...we have a 2 yr old and 8 month old?
I worry sometimes cause I am the one making appointments to make sure we dont miss "the window of opportunity" as all the Dr.s are telling me and not giving up but he seems overwhelmed with all of this, doesnt even research or seem to care...did anyone else go through that.

Re: New Here!
Hi Aimee,
I've seen the Mayo team 3 times and stayed at a different place each time. The Mayo campus is surrounded by hotels with easy access to the medical buildings, either by shuttle, pedestrian bridge, or tunnel. I've been at the Hilton Garden Inn, Kahler suites, and Holiday Inn express.
I was injured last winter (hit by a truck as pedestrian) and I was pretty withdrawn for a while too; my parents and my gf did most of the research while I was in the hospital. I spent my birthday covered in bandages and in a wheelchair, so I wasn't in the best mood either. But luckily I found this forum and gained a lot of knowledge and support, once I convinced myself to go to the site. Believe me I was pretty overwhelmed, as I'd never been a hospital patient before my accident.
Best of Luck to your husband!

Re: New Here!
I think its pretty common that he's withdrawn. This is a big life adjustment to make. Though I don't think he could really explain all whats going on in his mind to you even if he wanted to. He'll come back around some over time, but just knowing that you are doing everything you can to help him and you are gonna be there will help him greatly though he may not always tell you. If he does want to accomplish little goals here and there on his own, let him. Its really depressing at first trying to do things on your own but not knowing how. If he needs help, help him. If he wants to do something by himself (opening a jar, drying his back, etc.) let him and he'll ask you when he needs you.
But definately push him as he needs it to get better. It'll probably be tough. I have been a jerk to my family some because they don't help me enough or help me too much. They kinda had to do a balancing act. But I loved them and appreciated them the whole time.
