Brachial Plexus Injury Prefiled Bill for Senate

Post by mamaofsix »

I have some very exciting news! We sent a letter to our local congressman in Missouri and we were heard!!!! The Missouri Senate has Prefiled a Bill that requires all Missouri Hospitals to record brachial plexus injuries to the Department of Health and Social Services as well as mandates hospitals to give parents information regarding the injuries and importance of early intervention!!!!!!!! This is HUGE and our representative is confident that it will succeed.

You can see the prefiled bill here http://www.senate.mo.gov/10info/BTS_Web ... ID=3157603

I need ALL MISSOURI residents to ask your Senator to co-sponsor Bill 650! Write your personal stories! They need to know how important this is. I am writing ALL Missouri Senators, and you can too!!! You can get their information here. http://www.senate.mo.gov/llookup/leg_lookup.aspx

You can contact me Directly at stlbpi@yahoo

They are hoping to get a hearing in early 2010 in Jefferson City. If you live near Jeff City, please let me know!

Holy cow! That is fantastic! I have another mom who is trying to do something like this in Tennessee ...I will need to have her contact you to see if she can emulate the process you are using.

WAY TO GO!!!!

also, do you have a copy of the letter you sent? It might help others to frame their letter similarly-I would love to see some action in this area. I tried in MA a couple years ago, but never even got a response. I would try again though with a good framework to follow!!!!

A bill!!!! thats AWSOME for sure ;) :D Hi in a bill on my wish list would include that a hospital would have to have a bpi specialist on staff with possible bpi issues for delivery happen. I would add to that a doctor in emergence room would have to identify a possible bpi to the bpi doctor on staff to. BPI issues are always a time issue for sure ;) . Stepping of my soap box ;) :D

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: I am ROBPI, global injury, Horner's Syndrome. No surgery but PT started at 2 weeks old under the direction of New York Hospital. I wore a brace 24/7 for the first 11 months of my life. I've never let my injury be used as an excuse not to do something. I've approach all things, in life, as a challenge. I approach anything new wondering if I can do it. I tried so many things I might never have tried, if I were not obpi. Being OBPI has made me strong, creative, more determined and persistent. I believe that being obpi has given me a very strong sense of humor and compassion for others.

This is AMAZING! I am sure you must be thrilled. I hope everyone will write and support this bill. If I lived in Missouri I would gladly write in support.
Thanks so much for your efforts and outstanding accomplishment.
What is the name of your state Senator, perhaps we could all thank him.

Thanks everyone. I actually began with emailing my local congressman and told him our personal story and invited him to our family and friends picnic in Oct. He wasn't able to make it to the picnic, but he did view our video journey (the first one on You Tube, Cameron's Smile). He said he was "moved" by the video and asked what he could do to help us, and the rest is history (or hopefully will be soon!)

I would encourage everyone to write your Senators and Congressmen, on their websites the email addresses are posted, but you can also actually write a letter and tell them your personal journey and how they can help. Since we run a support group here, It was easy to not only convey my side, but also tell how so many other families are affected. I can't take back what happened to Cameron, but I can use our journey to help prevent other families from going through the same thing. Otherwise, I would feel like "this is just the way it is", but for him and our future, I can't accept that.

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: LOBPI. I am 77 yrs old and never had a name for my injuries until 2004 when I found UBPN at age 66.

My injuries are: LOBPI on upper body and Cerebrael Palsy on the lower left extremities. The only intervention I've had is a tendon transplant from my left leg to my left foot to enable flexing t age 24 in 1962. Before that, my foot would freeze without notice on the side when wearing heels AND I always did wear them at work "to fit in" I also stuttered until around age 18-19...just outgrew it...no therapy for it. Also suffered from very very low self esteem; severe Depression and Anxiety attacks started at menopause. I stuffed emotions and over-compensated in every thing I did to "fit in" and be "invisible". My injuries were Never addressed or talked about until age 66. I am a late bloomer!!!!!

I welcome any and all questions about "My Journey".

This is such wonderful news. Congratulations and great work. Truly a grassroots effort. Keep us up to date. Once the bill passes (fingers crossed) we can reference it for our state officials. I'm so excited!!!

What is the statue of limitations on a personal injury / medical malpractice case in California? I was told that it is 4 years from the date of injury? So is that the date that it happened, or the date that the injury from what happened set in ? Also someone else said that, it is the above OR the date that you became aware of the event, or the injury ?
