Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: Nicholas is 11 years old and his birth was complicated by a severe shoulder dystocia resulting in a severe LOBPI. He has had 5 surgeries to date with very little improvement. His left arm has never fully gained any functional use and has been completely flaccid until his last surgery. It now sits at a more natural position, but he is still unable to use his arm. However, his hand function was never limited until after his most recent surgery and is now completely limited due to an ulnar nerve entrapment. He is getting ready to have his 6th surgery in April to free the ulnar nerve from his last surgery. He is an amazing young man who never gives up on his dreams. He is my HERO!!!

Pain in thumb

Post by nkjacoby »

My son always says his thumb twitches when he is getting sick or even when the weather changes. I have tried everything, but this time nothing is easing his pain. Does anyone ever have this experience? If so what have you found that helps? It is breaking my heart and all I can do is give him Motrin and deep massage. Please pray for Nicholas during his painful times. This pain has been going on since yesterday morning. Tomorrow we are calling his doctor to see if they might want to do an x-ray or something. Any advice is appreciated.

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: To make an incredibly LONG story short...
When I was born, my mother's doctor was out of town. A doctor that would not perform c-sections was forced upon us. Being 10 lbs, my right shoulder got stuck under my mom's pubic bone. The doctor pulled me out by my head, which ripped/streched all the nerves in my neck and arm (So, OBPI).
I've had two surgeries at 9 months old, and 3 years old.
My mother suffered as well. She needed both brain surgery and a shunt--She still sufferes today.
My parents lost the court case due to a terrible jurey.

That's about it!
Hope I can find somebody my age to talk to :)

I've never had pain or twitching anywhere when I get sick or the weather changes. But I have found that when I get sick or a cold my scar from my surgery always gets red. Sorry I can't help.
Good luck with the Dr.

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: LOBPI. I am 77 yrs old and never had a name for my injuries until 2004 when I found UBPN at age 66.

My injuries are: LOBPI on upper body and Cerebrael Palsy on the lower left extremities. The only intervention I've had is a tendon transplant from my left leg to my left foot to enable flexing t age 24 in 1962. Before that, my foot would freeze without notice on the side when wearing heels AND I always did wear them at work "to fit in" I also stuttered until around age 18-19...just outgrew it...no therapy for it. Also suffered from very very low self esteem; severe Depression and Anxiety attacks started at menopause. I stuffed emotions and over-compensated in every thing I did to "fit in" and be "invisible". My injuries were Never addressed or talked about until age 66. I am a late bloomer!!!!!

Mom,
FYI,We OBPI-ers have strange twichtes and buzz stings from our injured nerves healing in STRANGE ways. Every person has different kinds and some the same. I can say I've had strange thumb numbness and twitch. Other adults have share omn this topic of "Zingers" & other strange pains too on the "Adults & Tenns With OBPI FORUM message Boards. EVERYONE is WELCOME on all message Boards.

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: My oldest daughter suffered a LOBPI. We were sent home form the hospital without being told anything was wrong. She had nerve graft surgery at one year of age, tendon transfer and release at 3 1/2 yrs of age.

My daughter had twitches and what she called "static" she explained it like an electrical shock pain like and e-stim machine was turned up too high. At first it came and went. We would use a cloth bag full of rice that we heated in the microwave. This worked for about 2 yrs. Then the pain and twitching became more frequent, intense, and lasting longer. She is now on neurontin (SP? don't have the bottle handy) it has helped sooo much. She still gets twitches and pain every once in a while, but it is much more managable. It might be worth speaking to your neurologist about. Side effects include sleepiness, but we have not had any problems with side effects. Good luck and you will be in our prayers

no external rotation against gravity, can only go to 90 degree fwd flexion, no hand-to-mouth
1 surgery at age 14 (latissimus dorsi transfer). In 2004, at age 28 I was struck with Transverse Myelitis which paralyzed me from the chest down. I recovered movement to my right leg, but need a KAFO to walk on my left leg. I became an RN in 2008.

There is Neurontin (gabapentin) or Lyrica (pregabalin) that work well for nerve pain.

Thank everyone for your advice. His pediatrician recommended Neurontin, but we did not feel that him being on a medication for pronlonged periods of time was an option we were comfortable with. We just couldn't justify the possibility of side effects and taking a medication daily could be justified right now. I am gonna try the rice trick in the microwave.

I have the same problem with pain in the thumb mine mostly runs in between the thumb joint and the thumb pad area of the palm. When my hand gets cold the pain is worse. To ease the pain I've tried the rice...hot water & paraffin wax bath(my 1# option) Sometimes I can also wrap my entire hand with an ace bandage for several minutes...for some reason that works for me! I will keep Nicholas in my prayers!

When my son's viral caused BPI is active he experiences pain, particularly in the thumb area. For him, its painful even if someone would blow on it. Hope he starts feeling better soon!
