Individuals with Disabilities Education Act - A Life Saver

Post by martimccabe1962 »

Hi!
This board has always been so helpful to me and I hope the information I'm about to pass along will beable to help others like it has for my daughter, Emily.

My daughter Emily has a BPI from birth. 6 months ago my family moved to FL and was told about the Early Intervention Program that is supported by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Part C. Supposely every state should have some type of program that supports Section C but I'm not sure.

My daughter was evaluated for the Early Intervention Program and has been accepted for it. Her physical therapy and occupation therapy is covered 100%. Even though I have medical insurance not everything is covered and effective 1/1/03 I will not have any medical insurance because I was laid off. We recently received an E-Stem unit which was denied my health insurance company but was able to get thru the EIP. My daughter qualifies for the EIP for 1 year and then she is evaluated again next year. I never heard of this program until I came to FL and it has been a life saver for Emily. Each state should have a similar program and it is not income based. Only based on need.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at martham2@bellsouth.net. It's well worth the paperwork.

Hi Marti and thanks for sharing... wanted to also let people know that for information about these programs in your state, you can go to http://www.nichcy.org.

In the last Outreach, Rich Looby wrote a wonderful article about state services. If you didn't get the Awareness Outreach (in October) - send your address to Nancy Birk at nancy@ubpn.org. Also - the article will be online next month.

Happy New Year,
