Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: January 1980 Yamaha RD200 vs 16 wheeler truck, result, 1 totally paralysed right arm. I was 21, now 54. I had no surgery, I don't regret this. Decided to totally ignore limitations (easily done aged 21) adapted very quickly to one handed life, got married, had 3 kids, worked- the effect of the injury on my life (once the pain stopped being constant) was minimal and now, aged 54, I very rarely even think of it, unless I bash it or it gets cold, then I wish I'd had it amputated :) Except for a steering knob on my car, I have no adaptations to help with life, mainly because I honestly don't think of myself as disabled and the only thing I can't do is peel potatoes, which is definitely a good thing.

Cyndi, I am so sorry to hear about this awful accident. I can't begin to imagine how you must be feeling now. It's good you are posting here and I hope we can be some support for you. Please take care of yourself and try and keep on top of the depression, easier said than done I know but we are all here to help you and remember you can email anyone by clicking on their name. Make sure your specialist knows how you are feeling, coming to terms with what has happened is as important as treatment for your arm, tbpi specialists do often have access to psychiatric care when that is needed-unfortunately it often is. You are not alone :0) Let us know how things are going for you, I really hope things start to feel better soon. Take care Jen NZ

Hello Cyndi,

I am not sure I can add anything to what Jenny said. The thing that came to mind is how difficult it must be for you to mourn everything that you lost that day. I mean where do you start?! You have lost your support system.

My next thought was you have to attempt to rebuild that support system. I hope that does not sound cruel. But this injury is so overwhelming at times. As you are finding out. A support system does make things somewhat easier. You did a great thing by posting here. We can be a great support system. At least we try to be. Are you married? Do you have family close? Do you have a pet or a favorite blanket or stuffed animal? Curl up with any of the above I have found that helps. If I don't want to talk but want comfort I go with the cat, blanket and my stuffed pig. They don't talk back and listen very well.

It is also important to remember that just because you are on anti-depressants does not mean they are the right ones. You may need a stronger one or oddly enough a smaller dose. Make your doctor aware that the dosage and pill you are currently taking is not really working. I have also found that an anti-anxiety works better for me than the anti-depressant. Especially around the holidays or family gatherings. :-p

If there is anything we can do let us know. Like Jenny said click on our name and you can email us privately. Take care of yourself Cyndi.

Cyndi,

My heart goes out to you. I can certainly relate to your depression. I feel really lost and depressed too due to my injury. If you ever want to e-mail a fellow christian, please do so at Mskath@aol.com. It helps to have another person, who understands what you are going through, listen and help, or pray together with you.

God bless,
Kathy
