arm and supination preblems

Post by admin »

Have any of you had a problem supinating the arm after the splint has been off during the day, but back on at nite? We have had the splint off for two weeks now and Bobbi's arm wont supinate like it was when we first removed it. The arm stops at the elbow, why? We have e-mailed Dr. Nath and the pt there who saw her while we were there, no response yet but do any of you have a suggestion? Thanks We will call our pt tomorrow she has been gonew for a week for the holidays. Jennifer Bobbi's mom.

Jennifer - please excuse my question but I really don't know... did Bobbie supinate before ? or did you see this for the first time afer the splint was off? or are you talking about PROM supination?

The reason I ask this is because Maia cannot supinate. But for two days after she had her capsulodesis splint off, she was able to supinate...(until the joint settled in again)and then we had to wait a long time before she allowed us to PROM supinate her.

Francine, I do not know what PROM supination is. the doc's told us that her hand had to be supinated while in the splint thats the first time I ever even heard of supination. She never was able to supinate before the surgery, but we were able to supinate her hand in the splint before. Now we have to force it and she really cries. Jennifer

PROM = passive range of motion - meaning that you are moving the arm itself into supination

ok - now I understand what you are talking about...

I hope that Dr. Nath gets back to you soon - I would even page him if you don't hear from him through email.

will you let us know what he says?

Hello Rich,

I have heard about the forced supination as well, but feel a little confused about what it actually means. It seems like there is so much room for different interpretations. This may seem like a silly question but does anyone have any idea of what "forced supination" would specifically mean? Are they meaning hard and just twisting with a lot of force? Or more like making supination happen when it wouldn't be naturally? Supinating a little past where the arm seems to naturally stop or what? How is a parent to know if they are doing it right or are taking it a little too far? No doctor has ever mentioned this to me. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Just bumping this up and hoping someone might be able to share their thoughts from the above question.

Thanks!
