HELP.....Kyle's_transition_meeting_coming_up.

Kyle_will_be_5_yrs_in_Dec._We_have_his_transition
meeting_coming_up._They_are_all_ready_telling_me_that
he_won't_qualify_for_services_anymore._This_is_the_pool_
therapy_he_receives_through_the_state._And_they_said
since_he_is_in_private_school_I_can_not_get_an_IEP_or
the_504_act_for_him_in_case_things_should_arise_.I_am
not_concerned_about_getting_the_therapy,_he_sees_two
private_therapists._But_I_want_an_IEP_in_his_records_so
when_things_arise_such_as_him_needing_help_toileting
and_at_lunch_time,_during_PE_class_&_recess(no_hanging_from_bars),and_anything_that_may_pop_up
later,_it_will_not_be_this_big_battle_to_fight_for_the
help_he_needs._Anyone_got_tips_on_how_to_fight_the
system?_Rich_in_MA.,how_bout_you....you_seem_pretty_
knowledgeable_on_this_matter.....HELP!!!_IDEAS??????

Kyle_will_be_going_to_public_school_next_year_for_kindergarten._
He_is_only_in_a_private_preschool/kindergarten_school_
right_now._I_am_holding_him_back_a_year_because_of_his_
late_birthday._So_there_will_be_a_lapse_in_time_from_
when_he_turns_5_in_Dec._and_when_he_starts_school_the_
following_Sept._How_do_I_go_about_getting_an_IEP_
before_he_starts_public_kindergarten?_He_just_had_his_evaluations_done_by_the_educational_
specialists_and_he_passed_with_flying_colors._Actually
_scored_above_average_on_everything_except_motor_
skills,_but_was_not_delayed_enough_in_that_area._We_
think_he_may_have_some_sensory_intergration_issues(mainly_concerning_the_auditory_processing),but_they_
do_not_test_them_at_this_young_age._We_live_in_
Maryland._Any_other_thoughts?_Thanks_for_anything_you_can_pass_along.

Karrie my son has a left BPI and started kindergarten this past Sept. We had lots of meetings with the school district and lots of battles. He has an IEP and was qualified for Other Health Impaired. They tell me he may not qualify next year, but because he's in Kindergarten its a little easier to qualify him (whatever that means). For now he gets 2 xs a week OT and 2x a week speach. We also have private insurance do PT 1x a week. When I went to the transition meeting I brought lots of information and shared it with them. This website has good info for school. I also mailed a copy to the head person who runs the meetings and told her I thought she needed to read it BEFORE the meeting. I highlighted all the important stuff. I have to tell you that when I wasnt prepared with information, that was the meeting they denied services for him. Be prepared and kinda dont take NO for an answer. I know its hard, just be persistant. Ask about the Other Health impaired qualification. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

Kyle_because_he_is_in_private_school._Kyle's_OT_wants_a_copy_
that_article_for_some_of_her_other_patients_who
are_having_similiar_problems.
Rich_thank_you_sooooo_much_for_all_the_time_you_took_to
respond_and_for_the_site_address._I_am_still_looking
into_some_of_them._Kyle_has_a_left_injury_and_is_right_hand_dominant._
They_are_telling_me_that_he_will_no_
qualify_for_services_because_it_does_not_impact_him
educationally_and_he_does_not_have_a_25%_or_more_delay.
I_want_to_at_least_keep_his_IEP_as_more_of_a_
precautionary_measure_incase_something_does_arise_that_
he_needs_adaptions_for._I_am_going_to_really_read_up_
on_the_sites_that_you_sent_me._Thank_you_again_for_
being
such_a_big_help._This_is_exactly_what_I_need_to_get_
started.
