Dr. George White, Orlando-Anybody have info?

Post by CathyFL »

Hello,

I'm new to the message boards. I'll give a little background first. My son Eric, has a BPI as a result of a mishap at football practice. He is 15 and his injury was in May 2008. He injured his right arm and he is right handed.

I'm sorry but I'm not up on all the proper names etc for the nerves he has injured and muscles affected, so much of this is over my head, but at first he could not lift his arm over his head but can now. He still has numbness and no sensation in his forearm and can not move his wrist up but can move it down. He also can move his fingers down and make a fist, but can not lift his fingers up. He has a hard time grasping things obviously and has a special splint made for him by the PT that allows him to grasp things as it has pulley like attachments for his fingers that lift them back up.

Right after his injury we went through all the standard nerve tests and MRI's. The neurologist we saw wanted Eric to see a BPI specialist in Miami but this doctor is not covered by my insurance and we have financial troubles (no $) so it was not possible to make 5-6 hour trips one way to see a doctor and then have to pay for lodging etc down there and pay out of pocket for the visits. Plus, time off work would have been needed. More then they could give me. There are no BPI specialists that I know of in Orlando.

Eric's PT referred us to Dr. George White, who is a hand surgeon. We have been seeing him every six weeks or so up until January. He always says the same thing. That my son is young and he believes the nerves will heal, that they are stretched and not torn and that it will take a while for them to heal and that surgery is not necessary. We have not noticed much improvement in the last 6 months and I am so worried that maybe he is wrong. I am so discouraged that we haven't seen him since January as I am reluctant to make yet another appointment and have him tell us the same thing, again. I have no clue who else I could take Eric to see. He was recommended as one of the best hand surgeons in Orlando. I have more questions but I'll start with this one. Anybody have opinions, experience with Dr. White?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Cathy in FL.

Cathy,
I saw on Dr.Nath's website that he will be in Orlando sometime in May or June. I would let him check it out for you. If I can find out more info for you I will let you know. You can also go on our website at http://ubpn.org/medicalresources

the medical resource page can guide you to Drs and they have filled out questionaires about themselves. Hope this helps....Judy
