My son Brandon is 10 1/2 and ROBPI !!! HE has never asked to play sports, but plays with the family and friends, but never organized, Until last fall when he sprung on me that he wanted to play Little League in Spring, I assured him he could, however, in the back of my head I was thinking it would pass, but it didn't !!!
So I sign him up and he gets awarded the spot at First Base. He hits leftie and throws rightie,(HIS BPI SIDE) he can hit rightie, but prefers leftie. He actually throws rather well can get the ball all the way across the field with ease.(He has also taught himself if he is out in the outfield that he can drop his glove and throw leftie, which is much better as far as distance.
Yesterday was his first game, I sit in the stands biting my nails, my husband is the Asst. Coach, for no other reason than I want him closer to the field, just in case he gets hurt and he can run out immediately and attend to him(It's the Worry Wart in ME !!!)
He made some awesome plays on First Base, an unassisted double play, dug some low throws out of the dirt and just looke good to me, however, I am him mom, so of course I thought that. So after the game the team was in the DUGOUT the parents were all gathered around and the couch was getting ready to award the game ball.
He handed Brandon the ball and told him that was because of the defense on First Base. I was so excited, but I cried. My little man did so well !!! And someone else saw it besides me !!! So for all the newbies out these, remember that with a little work and perserverance your child came become anything he wants to be. KEep your chins up, better days are coming !!!!
And then next week, the honor roll ceremony !!!

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: LOBPI. I am 77 yrs old and never had a name for my injuries until 2004 when I found UBPN at age 66.
My injuries are: LOBPI on upper body and Cerebrael Palsy on the lower left extremities. The only intervention I've had is a tendon transplant from my left leg to my left foot to enable flexing t age 24 in 1962. Before that, my foot would freeze without notice on the side when wearing heels AND I always did wear them at work "to fit in" I also stuttered until around age 18-19...just outgrew it...no therapy for it. Also suffered from very very low self esteem; severe Depression and Anxiety attacks started at menopause. I stuffed emotions and over-compensated in every thing I did to "fit in" and be "invisible". My injuries were Never addressed or talked about until age 66. I am a late bloomer!!!!!
I welcome any and all questions about "My Journey".

It has been a fantastic year so far. He did get hit by a pitch the other night, but he avoided it hitting that arm, I was relieved. Thank you for all the wonderful words. GAYLE

Thank you so much for sharing this. For those of us with younger children (my son is almost 5), we need this encouragement so much.

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: I am ROBPI, global injury, Horner's Syndrome. No surgery but PT started at 2 weeks old under the direction of New York Hospital. I wore a brace 24/7 for the first 11 months of my life. I've never let my injury be used as an excuse not to do something. I've approach all things, in life, as a challenge. I approach anything new wondering if I can do it. I tried so many things I might never have tried, if I were not obpi. Being OBPI has made me strong, creative, more determined and persistent. I believe that being obpi has given me a very strong sense of humor and compassion for others.
