Anyone else have this???????????

Post by Aspacia »

I am 32 years old and a female who has suffered with what i now believe is a brachial plexus injury. I don't know the onset, all i know is through my adolescent years the muscle in my left hand continued to weaken. I 've baffled about ever doctor i've been too. I've heard everything from polio to MS. Finally in 93, i had surgery on my left hand 9 tendon tranfers and fusion of my thumb. 10 years later, I don't think it helped and the muscles continue to atrophy. I was told that the third through seventh vertebre is deteriorated and as a result I also have Horners Syndrome in the left eye. Has anyone out there had a similar experience, if so what if any was the treatment???

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: January 1980 Yamaha RD200 vs 16 wheeler truck, result, 1 totally paralysed right arm. I was 21, now 54. I had no surgery, I don't regret this. Decided to totally ignore limitations (easily done aged 21) adapted very quickly to one handed life, got married, had 3 kids, worked- the effect of the injury on my life (once the pain stopped being constant) was minimal and now, aged 54, I very rarely even think of it, unless I bash it or it gets cold, then I wish I'd had it amputated :) Except for a steering knob on my car, I have no adaptations to help with life, mainly because I honestly don't think of myself as disabled and the only thing I can't do is peel potatoes, which is definitely a good thing.

What doctors have you seen? Have you seen a neurologist? There are several conditions affecting the peripheral nerves including the brachial plexus but bp injuries (as opposed to diseases) do not generally get worse with time, they either get better or they don't. It sounds as if you're right, something is causing the breakdown of these nerves and I wish you every succes in finding answers. Good luck and keep us posted :0)

Yes, I've been to nuerologists, had MRI's, the works...

I just went to see a specialist in Miami. He thinks he may be able to straighten out my fingers by fusing my wrist. I'm going for MRI's on the 9th and then to see another specialist.
