Hi,
I have just joined your forum and am so pleased to have found you. I have had a look through a good number of threads and have not come across this topic - maybe I've missed it.
I'm 55 and have noticed that over the past few years my Erbs arm has developed a periodic twitch. I've been quite concerned about this but as yet have not been to my GP. I don't have this all the time but I notice that my thumb, index finger, wrist or sometimes my elbow will move involuntarily. I think this is because I hold this arm very tense and that I under-use it. I'd like to hear if any of you have had this or similar experiences, or if you can shed any light on what may be happening. Chrissie

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: LOBPI. I am 77 yrs old and never had a name for my injuries until 2004 when I found UBPN at age 66.
My injuries are: LOBPI on upper body and Cerebrael Palsy on the lower left extremities. The only intervention I've had is a tendon transplant from my left leg to my left foot to enable flexing t age 24 in 1962. Before that, my foot would freeze without notice on the side when wearing heels AND I always did wear them at work "to fit in" I also stuttered until around age 18-19...just outgrew it...no therapy for it. Also suffered from very very low self esteem; severe Depression and Anxiety attacks started at menopause. I stuffed emotions and over-compensated in every thing I did to "fit in" and be "invisible". My injuries were Never addressed or talked about until age 66. I am a late bloomer!!!!!
I welcome any and all questions about "My Journey".

WELCOME Chrissie to our UBPN Family.
Yes, strange "twiches" and Spasms are a part of our Lifetime injuries, and holding your arm stiff at an length of time can cause strange feelings. I have learned alot since finding this web site and Family...our injured nerves , uncorrected or without interventions have grown in weird ways.. everyone's injuries are different but we adults have shared these "strange" feelings...some people have little or no feeling on their injured side.
Keep reading and asking questions...there is no such thing as a dumb question.
Also, I hope you re "saving" your Right "good" arm because as we age we can develope problems with over-use.
FYI, you can type a word or phrase in the "Search Forums" link at the tope of any page and all of the posts on the subject will come up for you.
I am glad you found us, I didn't until age 65.

Chrissie -
First of all WELCOME! It is always so great to see new people finding the boards. The people on here have been vital to me in my quest to understand my "situation" and deal with the side effects!
I had spasms/twitching in my affected bicep a few years ago. There was no pain, it just looked like my upper arm was trying to dance by itself! Wondering if it was a nerve issue, I went to my GP who said he couldn't really tell me. I have had them occasionally, but they never got any worse so I didn't worry about them.
Last year when I began seeing a chiropractor about a muscle impingment in my "good" shoulder caused by overuse, I asked him about the twitching abd he told me that it was a build-up of lactic acid in the muscle. The lactic acid builds up because the muscle doesn't get used like it is designed to be used. I don't know if that is what is causing your twitches but they sound similar to mine!
I won't go into all the details about how this doctor has changed my life - that is out there in my other posts! - but the active release therapy he does eliminated the twitching and that bicep isn't nearly as tight as it used to be. (My arm even hangs more "normally" when it is at rest.) He has also done wonders for my other shoulder.

Hi Lisa,
Thank you so much for your message. Apart from visiting a consultant (in what I don't know) when I was very small, I have never seen anyone about my arm or had any treatment for it. I am wondering whether a visit to an 'expert' in this condition might help improve things.I am interested to learn more about the help that you have received.
I am quite ignorant regarding the damage I have in that arm or what the impacts are. Your mention of lactic acid build up did strike a chord as my bicep in that arm is very pronounced - it's in a permanent state of tension. That said I am suprised that it hasn't withered as I hardly use that arm at all. It is usually after occasionally carrying a bag or something that I find I have twitches in the hand and wrist area. I don't carry things very often as the arm doesn't rotate outwards and a bag tends to catch my left leg. I do wish I had explored this sooner. As I have hidden my arm so I have hidden my feelings surrounding it and avoided engaging with the issues. I might have improved my discomfort, posture, etc. if I had visited someone earlier who could offer some help with the arm. Chrissie

Chrissie,
The name of our Specialist would be BPI Specialist.
Even tho I'm too old for surgery interventions, I had a Consult with a BPI Specialist in 2006. It answered alot of questions I've had and helped me in finding therapies to give pain/discomfort relief. (my LOBPI hand had become quite contractured and artheritis is setting in my thumb and wrist.)

Hi Carolyn,
I guess its been about 2 yrs sents I been here. Carolyn, I was born with ERBS on the left. I am 56 and I have a quetion? I learn to think one arm, I sure am glad they can improve ERBS now. In the 50s polio was big, so it was easer for a doctor to say I had a form of Polio than ERBS. I dove SEMI for more than 20yrs,I am a Padi Master Diver. My bigest challenge was getting past my limiation the best I could. Retired and Happy Because I gain a big word called determination to get past life. I will get of the soap box.

Soap Boxes are fine for us older folk to encourage the
"young'uns" to do everything they want to but take care of our "good " limbs too & start early!
Come back more often, Tom.

Re: LOBPI - twitch & spasm
I get spasms and twinges too. I'll get real small ones through my OBPI arm but I get awful ones in my back near my shoulder on my affected side. They can be so bad that it causes me to gasp in pain. I've never figured out how to stop them or even any correlation to anything I'm doing.
Re: LOBPI - twitch & spasm
It is good to feel that I am not alone and I'm so thankful that I found this message board. I notice that I have twitches when I carry things in my LOBPI arm and they tend to last for a few days afterwards. I have noticed that I am getting twitches alongside my shoulder blade also - regardless of what I have been doing. I am wondering if this is because I am trying to do more with that arm in order to save my 'good' arm.
