Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: RTBPI - injured during a right cervical rib resection on 12/3/2008 for thoracic outlet syndrome. The doctor completely transected the lateral cord at C5-C6 Erb's pointe and the suprascapular nerve. Had a nerve repair done on 12/12/2008 to reattach the nerves. Did two years of OT. I have some issues with overuse issues with my left shoulder and also have come to find that my joints are hypermobile so I have instability in the joints which causes a lot of problems such as pressure and pain.

Want to help with a research paper?

Post by Its1105 »

Hey Everyone!

My roommate is an anthropology student at Purdue University. She is interested in physical and cultural anthropology and eventually wants to go to med school and be an ER doctor.

She has seen me dealing with my injury (emotional, physical, etc) and was wanting to do her anthropology paper concerning TBPI and how people deal with them. She has tried to look up info and there is not really any research about it. She has asked me if I would be willing to talk to her, and of course I am... but she will need more responses from others as well.

I was just curious, would any of you mind if she came on here to ask questions and get an idea of how things are for others. Or if you are willing to just email me and I can get her in touch with you as well that is fine. I just figured I would try to help her out a bit. Each student has to write a paper before they graduate (she is a sophomore right now) and she seems really into this.

Thanks,
Marie

I would be glad to help as well. I seem to be on the opposite end of the spectrum of most people in that I am seeing quite a bit of spontaneous recovery in the last month and a half. She can email me and/or check out my blog, which I have been sort of lazy about updating lately. My blog has a few entries of my emotional state during the first 5 months post accident. http://humboldtmtnbkr.blogspot.com/. Hope this is helpful, JJ.

I am an OBPI, but would be willing to talk to her if it would help or if she decided to widen the scope of the paper. My email is on my profile. (I'm also in Indiana, although I am waaaaaaaaaaay down south in Evansville.)

A friend of mine who is graduating with a physical therapy degree in May used BPI for her "project" for school and I was her case study. She had seen how much I have to deal with and wants to focus on being able to help OBPI kids. (There are no therapy "specialists" near here.)It really showed me how much she does care about me and I'm sure you feel the same about your roomie.

We are truly blessed when we have friends who take on our situations in this way and help to educate others!

If she needs a parent's point of view, I would be willing to help. My daughter was injured when she was 20 and she's 23 now. Sue

Hello Everyone!

I am its1105's roommate! Thank you all for being so gracious and willing to participate in my research paper. As Marie stated, I am beginning to collect stories/events for my honors thesis. So, with that said, I will be emailing you all and/or posting back here with in a month or two. I am still developing effective questions for interviews and researching TBPI.

Thanks,
Lauren
