what to expect when cast is removed
HI EVERYONE, MY NEPHEW IS HAVING HIS CAST OFF IN 2 WEEKS. HE HAD A MUSCLE TRANSFER AT SHRINERS IN PHILADELPHIA,(DR. KOZIN) HE HAS NOT COMPLAINED ONCE ABOUT THE CAST(YET) I REALIZE THAT IT'S ONLY HALF OVER BUT HE HAS BEEN GREAT. IT HAS NOT SLOWED HIM DOWN AT ALL. I AM JUST CONCERENED ABOUT THE PAIN OF HAVING THE CAST REMOVED. DR. KOZIN DID TELL HIS PARENTS THAT THE MOST PAIN HE'LL FEEL IS WHEN THE CAST IS REMOVED. I WAS JUST WONDERING WHAT ANYONE ELSE HAS EXPERIENCED. I COME BY AND READ THE BOARD WHEN I CAN AND ALTHOUGH I DON'T RESPOND I DO THINK ABOUT EVERYONE AND KEEP YOU IN MY PRAYERS. I DON'T KNOW HOW YOU PARENTS CAN GO THRU SOO MUCH, I GUESS IT IS A COMFORT TO COME HERE AND TALK TO PEOPLE WHO ARE GOING THRU THE SAME. ANYWAY, KNOW THAT MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU ALL. Aunt Robin-I'm soooo excited I can answer someone's question!!!My son, Peyton (3 yrs old), had the muscle transfer surgery at Shriners with Dr. Kozin at the end of August. He experienced no discomfort whatsoever when they removed his cast! The staff who removed it let him examine the saw (the tickle saw!) before they used it. Peyton is pretty laid back, but the staff were very gentle, let him know what they were doing, etc. I think the two most discomforting parts for him were removing the surgical tape/gauzes over the incisions, and the first few minutes of his therapy after the cast was removed. I ended up soaking him in the tub and removing the tape SLOWLY! I'm really glad I could answer your questions! And if you or your nephew's parents have any more questions please feel free to email me!
