Is walking affected by BPI?
Is walking affected by BPI?
My son is almost 2yrs. old and I have noticed that he doesn't swing his injured right arm. He also walks with his right side slightly ahead of his left with his right foot pointed a little outward. It is hard to evaluate since he is so young and walks awkwardly now anyway. I was curious if there were anyone else out there who is older and their walk is affected by the injury? Will a muscle transfer help this situation?

Hi Paula
I'm Paula too. My son Aaron 14 mos also walks like that his ot says that he has gait problems. Another thing that I have noticed is that when he walks he always have to have something in his injured hand. When we are outside he picks up a rock and carries it around. If he drops it he stops and picks it up. Strange. You ought to see my collection of rocks that he has by the front door! Reminds me of the Sen. Bob Dole he said that he also has to have something in his hand so he carries around a pen. I hope you find the answers your looking for. Just wanted to welcome you to the boards.

Re: Is walking affected by BPI?
Hi Paula
I am right obpi and when I look at old photos I walked right shoulder leaning forward. I think when we are injured the entire side of our body is then compromised.
I never paid attention to it but since finding the board I realized I had a gait problem. I took lots of gymnastics and dancing lessons and swimming really helped to make my legs stronger. But my left leg is stronger then the right.
Holding the rock in his hand.
When I first came to the message boards I asked this question on the Adult/board. "Does anyone walk around with things in their hand for long periods of time and not realize it?" The answer was amazing to me, we all do. I am not sure what the reason is - it could be because feeling is diminished in that hand and I don't feel it - could be because I sometimes forget I have an arm so I forget something is in it -- or it could be that some of us feel cold stronger then hot... sensory input is needed. I was glad to have a reasonable answer I thought I was the only one. But sibling told me that when I was young I would look all over for something and it would be right in my right obpi hand...
Hope this helps

Re: Is walking affected by BPI?
Paula - PT will be very helpful with all this stuff. Does Aaron have regular PT ?
Re: Is walking affected by BPI?
Paula,
My daughter also walks with her right foot out more pointed. I got told it is because your arms give you most balance and when your nerves/muscles aren't working, your balance is thrown off. I hope this helps!
