Our son is scheduled to have Mod Quad surgery at the end of October at TCH. He has a ROBPI. He doesn't supinate and lacks external rotation. Anyone whose child has had this surgery, "Did they gain the supination and shoulder rotation after surgery?" We know that is what the surgery is suppose to do. I can't find but a few people that have actually had this surgery only as the first surgery.

This surgery is supposed to give better range of motion.
My son had this surgery and is doing great. He can bring his arm all the way up and he can reach the back of his head. As he tells us..."he has muscles" he is so happy. HE is four now and had Mod at 14 1/2 months. But his arms are now equal in size because of the mod quad. He is doing really well and has alot more strength in the affect(RIGHT) sight. It has been a blessing !!!

Hi- did you get the latest Outreach? If not, please email Nancy birk at nancy@ubpn.org and she will get you a copy... there is a good article in there about supination.
A mod quad will not guarantee supination. It will certainly help with the internal rotation issue - the positioning. IF your child doesn't have supination because of positioning then it will help, but if your child doesn't have supination for lack of biceps, then that's a different story.
BUT you don't do mod quad for supination...I think the priority on mod quad is to get as much forward shoulder flexion as possible so that the child has a chance at a more normalized joint. (Raising the arm straight up without using the chest muscles to compensate, etc.)
Mod quad is an important surgery because it takes care of the contractures AND the muscle imbalances at the same time. The results we had were just incredible...as I am sure many others will report as well.
But there are many other reasons that supination might not happen....get that Outreach ok?
