Need help for young man we met!!!

Post by Mica »

I am hoping one of you has an idea about how to help a young man our family met while vacationing.

He is from Ukraine, on a summer work study in N.C. He's 20, ROBPI with a BADLY subluxed shoulder. He's had absolutely no medical or therapeutic intervention for his injury.

His shoulder is subluxed to the point that he cannot access his deltoid in any fashion. It is almost as if his shoulder is fused to his body. He has excellent hand and wrist function, and very good biceps return.

When we were speaking with him, he asked if anything could be done to help him. Money/insurance seems to be his obstacle.

Does anyone know of any programs that might help this young man see a specialist before he goes home this Fall? I feel like he's been victimized twice!

I'm going to call the N.C. Dept. of Health to see if they have any ideas. I'd be grateful for any ideas you all might have to help him!

Thank you!

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: LOBPI. I am 77 yrs old and never had a name for my injuries until 2004 when I found UBPN at age 66.

My injuries are: LOBPI on upper body and Cerebrael Palsy on the lower left extremities. The only intervention I've had is a tendon transplant from my left leg to my left foot to enable flexing t age 24 in 1962. Before that, my foot would freeze without notice on the side when wearing heels AND I always did wear them at work "to fit in" I also stuttered until around age 18-19...just outgrew it...no therapy for it. Also suffered from very very low self esteem; severe Depression and Anxiety attacks started at menopause. I stuffed emotions and over-compensated in every thing I did to "fit in" and be "invisible". My injuries were Never addressed or talked about until age 66. I am a late bloomer!!!!!

I welcome any and all questions about "My Journey".

Because he is from the Ukraine he may be able to still be seen at Shriners. They are supposed to be current patients to be seen after age 18 but they might make an exception as they do see patients up to 21 years old, thats when I was discharged.

Also try calling Gillette in Minnesota, I believe they see adults too. There is one bpi specialist, I have haerd great things about her however I personally never want to see her again.

And like Carolyn said try the Mayo Clinic in MN. They do some cherity work. Not sure if he will get anywhere but it doesnt hurt to try.
Good luck to this young man!

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: I am ROBPI, global injury, Horner's Syndrome. No surgery but PT started at 2 weeks old under the direction of New York Hospital. I wore a brace 24/7 for the first 11 months of my life. I've never let my injury be used as an excuse not to do something. I've approach all things, in life, as a challenge. I approach anything new wondering if I can do it. I tried so many things I might never have tried, if I were not obpi. Being OBPI has made me strong, creative, more determined and persistent. I believe that being obpi has given me a very strong sense of humor and compassion for others.

I can't help with any other information but you guys are great for trying to help him. It would be wonderful if he can get some treatment and possibly more function.

Guys,

I'm hitting dead ends with this. This young man really needs help - but no one has been willing to help him on a charity basis.

Does anyone have specific contact names and numbers I could try? I really would love to help him.

Thank you!
