for the longtimers

Post by s8n »

does the pain from a tbpi ever go away? it's almost been a year and it sometimes feels like i just had the wreck.and now i'm getting pains in my other shoulder and back from haulin this heavy arm around.i go to pain management but i get the feeling since all tbpi's are different the dr. never knows what to do about pain.i never felt pain like i do now when i was in the hospital.they were givin me the good stuff then.but when they turned me loose they told me to take tylenol i said screw that and found a dr that i could at least talk to about it.he gives me meds that make it tolerable but still it hurts very bad at times.i was just wondering does the brain ever let up on thinking that arm is still valid or is it pain all the way?not to be morbid or nothing.i just wanna know if i have options or not.i have had all the surgeries and the surgeon just told me it's the waiting game.i'm just wondering.

Daniel,

I'm not sure what drugs your doctor has tried on you, but get the list Scott recommended, and talk to your doctor about all the options.

For some reason, they work differently on all of us, and sometimes differently on different days. When my pain acts up (I'm lucky to not have to take anything daily anymore) I have options.

It really helps to have a variety for those days when the usual meds just don't work.

If your not I recommend trying out Lyrica. I was on nuronton (sp?) for 9 months 300mg 3x/day and always at about a level 4-6 pain. I switched to Lyrica 8 and I'm down to 100mg 2x/day. The pain hasn't gone away (I don't think it ever will totally) but I'm at a level 1-3. There are many times I forget about the nerve pain altogether.

In regards to shoulder muscle soreness from carrying the arm. I don't know how much you can do about that. To alienate the problem I support my arm at work with a pillow (I work at a desk) and then use this : http://www.activeforever.com/p-1532-bau ... pport.aspx
(lok around I've seen it cheaper)

My surgeon who did my BP repair said that the have seen nerve pain levels decrease as well by using the brace above because there is less tension on the nerves withe the arm not subluxing as much.

Cheers,
Joel

Hi Joel,
Congratulations on beating the monster down so that it's barely noticeable. I know there are more than a few of us who would like just a day or two like that.
How can you manage to put on that straight jacket looking thing by yourself?

Daniel,
Please go to the message I had posted earlier and discuss the different meds with your Dr..
http://www.flickr.com/photos/athleticarmsling/

The first sling allows you to go out and kick BPI Butt
The second sling allows you to watch someone go out and kick BPI Butt.
Check out SSD. If your condition is bad enough you know you may qualify for help. Then check out the meds and slings and see if they'll help.

Hey Scott,

The brace is not that hard to put on. Sometimes I use a wall to hold one of the straps. But for the most part its not too hard.

Hi
Those of u using Lyrica, Did u have a look at possible problems like with sperm count and/or possible sperm discrepancies? Here in S Africa Lyrica is hailed as the next wonderdrug 4 TBPI. My son would like to use it, but at 22 healthy sperm is important!!

Hi~
I'm going on 21 years. My injury happened when I was 17. My nerve pain has always been there and sometimes its hard to focus on anything else but waiting for the pain to go away. I tried meds but they aren't for me.
Now the pain I have, along with nerve pain, is in my shoulder from hanging for years and years. My doctors, from Mayo Clinic, said when I was ready they could fuse my shoulder back into place to relieve the hanging pain. I'm sure you don't experience that right now. I also noticed my hands swell ALOT when I over use my arm as well.
I wish I could say my pain got better but its hasn't and the hanging pain, for me, is really bad. Sorry....................
But there are many pills you can take to take away the pain, if you chose that route GOOD LUCK. I hope it works for you.
