Sarah is out of her cast!!
Sarah is out of her cast!!
Sarah had her cast off today. She brought her arm down immediately, with a look of discomfort on her face. She hasn't used it much, as though she still had the cast on. She is sore and told me she'd prefer to not do much with it tonight. I said that was fine but that stretching and range of motion would begin in the morning. Sarah can however get her arm up higher abover her head than before the surgery and the doctors said that her tricep is "firing", now we just need to try to build it up. It was quite a nerve racking experience for us. We didn't know what to expect. I guess in some ways I still don't. Hopefully insurance will let us go out of network, 15 min. away for pediatric pt vs. having to drive 1 hour one way to a participating provider. Sarah had a warm bath and some motrin when we got home and that seemed to help some. Any ideas anyone is willing to share about ways to encourage her to do the stretching or other things that may help, I'd love to hear them. Thanks. Mary
Re: Sarah is out of her cast!!
Hi Mary,
It sounds like your daughter is doing well. My daughter has had 4 surgeries and if I have learned anything it's the word slow. I was always so anxious to get right to the therapy and stretching. Warm baths before stretching seemed to do the trick. This last time she was 6 yrs. so I let her do a lot of the stretching herself. She is now 7 and is doing weights at therapy now. This is a first for her and it's great to see her actively participating in her therapy instead of thinking she is playing. Take your time with you daughter and enjoy the new things she will be able to do. Best wishes!
