Paula,
Apocalypse Now is a great film, loosely based on Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, but it is not a family film. It's a deep dark psychological story. Maybe after the kids go to bed ....

Martin Sheen in Readers Digest-
Re: Martin Sheen in Readers Digest-
Oh well thanks for the warning.
Re: Martin Sheen in Readers Digest-
Martin Sheen is an activist. If he is obpi why would'nt he take up the cause of the innocent children and families who are injured?
If he is obpi I am sure that he has been questioned all his life about the way he moves his arm. Those of us who are adult obpi know that from time to time people are curious and just ask questions about it. As we mature I think our skin get thick and we are not offended.
I think that perhaps Mr.Sheen was also sure he had a RARE birth injury and he was the ONLY ones with it and of course injuring him spared his Mother's life... How many of us were told the exact same story!!! Just because he is famous does not mean he had access to the information we now have, any sooner then the rest of us... This information needs to be digested when we find the boards and begin to get the REAL facts about our birth injury. It is a lot to comprehend and we have to change our way of thinking... it mean our entire life we believed one thing about ourselves only to find out it was a lie...
It takes time to let the information sink in and settle in... If he is obpi give it time and I am sure that he would not snub this cause because he could not handle it... I really do not have the impression that he is weak... Most of the obpi's I have met are pretty tough. I would find it hard to imagine that Mr.Sheen would find out that others are still being injured on a daily basis and not use his power to try stop it.

Re: Martin Sheen in Readers Digest-
I just went into readersdigest.com and entered his name in the search and came across the interview. He said his shoulder looks like a pyramid from the forceps and that his left arm was smashed at birth. very interesting.

Yeah, in the interview he said that he can only turn his arm so much and that he went to a clubfoot clinic in NY to try to correct it when he was 18 yrs old and they were going to do surgery on him. he was going to be a guinea pig for them. but on the day of the surgery he was waiting and just walked out of the office and never went back he said that he did not think that he had a problem. Although he said that he was a great athlete but because of his arm could not participate too much.

Kathleen,
The episode of West Wing I watched showed him picking his glasses up off of his desk. He raised his elbow way up to get his hand to his face. It was very interesting to watch.

I was watching very carefully and had my husband notice how he moved too because I am not always aware of the way I move. Yet I recognized his motions talking etc. Writst bent elbow out waving his arm...
Go figure-- I never noticed it before.
I hope he will read the Awareness material as well as some of the posts from the Adult/obpi board and recognize us here and be a public advocate for bpi injured like Sen.Dole who is tbpi. Maybe it could be tied into the story line of the show.... that should be interesting!!!
It would take a lot of courage to do that!

Re: Martin Sheen in Readers Digest-
I too saw the article on Martin Sheen and immediately sent him a letter. I never write letters, so I think it was meant to be. I told him about the site and asked him to be a spokesperson for the group. Hey, it can't hurt. It didn't sound like he knew what injury he had and we have an adult man in our support group who was interested to find that he wasn't the only person like this, that there was a name to his injury and there were other people to talk to about it.
Here's hoping we hear from Mr. Sheen...
