I had this procedure done at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota (http://www.mayoclinic.org/brachial-plexus/). I had it done for elbow flection, to bend my elbow.

Check around with other doctors. Last I knew Dr. Nath did NOT perform this procedure.

Please feel free to email me. courtney@ubpn.org

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: January 1980 Yamaha RD200 vs 16 wheeler truck, result, 1 totally paralysed right arm. I was 21, now 54. I had no surgery, I don't regret this. Decided to totally ignore limitations (easily done aged 21) adapted very quickly to one handed life, got married, had 3 kids, worked- the effect of the injury on my life (once the pain stopped being constant) was minimal and now, aged 54, I very rarely even think of it, unless I bash it or it gets cold, then I wish I'd had it amputated :) Except for a steering knob on my car, I have no adaptations to help with life, mainly because I honestly don't think of myself as disabled and the only thing I can't do is peel potatoes, which is definitely a good thing.

Hi Ewa
There are experienced surgeons for this kind of work in Europe, and as Poland is in the EEC it would probably be a lot cheaper to locate someone there. Check the medical resources page for names, but I know this kind of work is being done in the UK and Italy, probably France and Holland too. The Mayo Clinic that Courtney has provided the link for are undoubtedly the nost experienced team in the USA for adult injuries, they may also be taking part in the multi centre studies currently being undertaken internationally, where the best and most experienced bpi doctors are sharing results, so would know of a doctor nearer you to contact for help.
Hope this helps, and I hope you get some results!
You might also try posting at www.tbpi-group.org, a website for bpi based in the uk, I'm sure some members there have had similar procedures. There are several posters from European countries posting there who might be able to help.
Cheers

Hi Ewa,

My son had the same surgery done at the Mayo Clinic and had excellent results. In the US, they probably have done more of these surgeries than anyone else. Dr. Nath might be doing them now, but I'd strongly encourage you to find a doctor who has a lot of experience because it is extremely complicated surgery.

This particular surgery was first done by Dr. Doi in Asia, and you might find it less expensive to pursue in Asia. Dr. Shin at Mayo could probably give you some suggestions, as he studied the procedure in Asia before bringing it back to the US.

Best of luck! Take care,

Ellen

my son had this operation, last year after a motorcycle accident,by doctor Gilbert Alain,in Paris[it costed around 14000 eur.]He is one of the top doctors worldwide[in fact one of the first who started this method].

PROF. ALAIN GILBERT

Since 1977, Prof. Alain Gilbert has developed his experience of Obstetric plexus repair at the Hopital Trousseau and the Institut de la Main. During this period more than 3300 patients have been seen. Over 700 had a plexus repair and several hundreds had secondary procedures on the shoulder, elbow and hand.

I think you don't have complete paralysis[you're moving your elbow and wrist[my son on the other hand, has complete paralysis[4 nerves avulsed, the fifth cut and has no movement at all].though, every case is unique,i think you have good chances for recovery, but you shouldn't delay the operation.Wish you the best.

Hi Ewa,

I know the distances are huge, but my family will be in Budapest mid-June, and Prague at the end of June 2008. John will be with us if you're in the area and would like to meet. He will be 21 in June. Here's his story from the Mayo website.

Take care,
