Recovery time.

Post by Hagafan »

Hi, I had a motorcycle accident september 2006 and damaged my c5,6 and 7.I had a nerve graft november 2006 and have been told by the consultant not to expect anything movement till at least june 2008.
Has anyone had a similar accident and how has the recovery gone.
How long does it take till you are able to return to work, as the insurance company of the person who knocked me off were pushing me to find a new job four months after the accident.

The time period you posted was actually 1 1/2 years. Is that correct, or did you mean 6 months? Expectation of time for nerve innervation is based on the length the grafted or transferred nerve needs to grow to reach the muscle - and only your surgeon would know that answer based on what was done during surgery. The other post is correct that nerves grow about 1 inch per month.

What type of work are you returning to? That would make a difference.

Take care,

Ellen

yeah around 18 months from the op till I should hope to start feeling some sort of movement.Apparantly I was about 1 inch away from pulling them from the spine, if that makes any difference to the healing time I don't know.
My job was just manual labour.I don't know if it works the same in america as here in england, that you don't get much compensation for your injuries its nearly all based on how much work you lose so the other persons insurance company totally pressure you into going back to any form of employment whether you are fit to or not.

Hi Hagafan,

I see you are from the UK. I don't know if you know that there is a group set up in the UK for people with a TBPI. We are a registered charity since 2002 and we have our own website http://www.tbpi-group.org and messageboards similar to this one at http://p098.ezboard.com/badultswithbrac ... usinjuries

You'll find lots of info about UK based treatment etc and hopefully more answers to your questions on the UK boards. Registering with the messageboards is easy, like this one. Just follow the instructions from the link on the messageboards first page.

I am curious about who your surgeon was. We are aware of quite a few BPI surgeons/specialists in the UK and they are aware of our group and usually pass our details on to their patients.

I am the chairperson of the charity and am more than willing to help in any way I can. I have had this injury for nearly 15 years now.

Feel free to email me BlcE@aol.com anytime.

Liz F :)
