Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: I am ROBPI, global injury, Horner's Syndrome. No surgery but PT started at 2 weeks old under the direction of New York Hospital. I wore a brace 24/7 for the first 11 months of my life. I've never let my injury be used as an excuse not to do something. I've approach all things, in life, as a challenge. I approach anything new wondering if I can do it. I tried so many things I might never have tried, if I were not obpi. Being OBPI has made me strong, creative, more determined and persistent. I believe that being obpi has given me a very strong sense of humor and compassion for others.

Myotrac use

Post by Kath »

Hi All

I just purchased the Myotrac surface emg machine.
I am trying to see if I can get some of my muscles to function better.

This is a test and I have no way of know what will happen but I personally thought it was worth the try for me.

Here is the Board set up to check on the progress we are making.

Carolyn said she wanted to read about our experience using the Myotrac surface emg.

Kate explained how this machine operates on the General Message Board.
Here is the link to this post because it gives the technical information.

Kath,

That's great! You'll have to let me know how it is working for you. You said you had deltoid, bicep and tricep movement at the end of camp.

Do you know how often you do that during a day or can you just do it whenever you want to as long as you are working the muscles correctly.

Keep us updated for sure on this.

Rachel
My triceps seem to be working on their own. It is so surprising to me when I notice I reached for something with my right hand.

My deltoid is also functioning with out me focusing on them. I just don't know what to make of these new movements.

My biceps will be a tough one and I think the goal will be to focus on the movements each muscle was designed to do then to get them to work together.

I got a pretzel to my mouth without even thinking about it. There were left on the front seat of my car and I just reached over and put it in my mouth. My elbow was straight out but not in the trumpet form. Just think how many cookies I could have had at Camp if I had used the machine before... LOL...

I see where someone found a place to rent the machine...
Too late for me I was so excited I ordered it.
It was not worth the run around and fight with the doctors and therapists. I am so tired of trying to explain why I would want more function.

Before using the Myotrac I only used my traps to make my right arm function. Now I see I am using my deltoid and triceps. Like Kate said my brain has found the forwarding address to my arm. It seems as if my brain and arm lost contact and now my brain has discovered my muscles.

I will have to do a lot of work to get some strength in this arm but it will be worth it. If I can use some of the other muscles to function it will take the strain off my neck and traps.

Kate said my traps are HUGE ... they are so built up.

Kath,

Wow!! That is such great news. I just e-mailed you this a.m. wondering how the machine was working for you.

I have heard a lot of that about the brain and retraining it to send signals to parts of the body that aren't used to working.

Amazing....Keep up the work and let me know how it continues to work for you.
