Hi,
My husband left wearing jeans after his accident 3 years back which left him with a right TBPI. One of the reasons being that he cannot accomodate his right arm in the pocket of his jeans.
I wonder if anyone can suggest some modifications to jeans so that I can see him wear what he loves to wear.

Dustin wears jeans and puts his left(affected) arm in the pocket. He thinks it looks more "normal" that way. It took me a while to teach him to button his own jeans as his right hand lost coordination after the accident. I did have to have him wear them a bit looser than he was so we could get them buttoned or snapped. Some girl told him he looked good in tight jeans so he was really wearing them tight, but I wasn't going to fight to get them done and he couldn't do it when they were that tight. Now that he's pretty handy at doing his own pants he has gotten another tight pair, lol.
Not sure what you are looking , a way for your husband to get his hand in the pocket?

My son has LBPI. He also puts his left hand in pocket. Needs pockets of jean to be in a straight line . Angled pockets make the elbow swing out and puts strain on shoulder area. Voorspoed!!

O yes, forgot to mention, his thumb stays on the outside- only 4 fingers go into pocket. Looks quite modern and like a model stance!

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: January 1980 Yamaha RD200 vs 16 wheeler truck, result, 1 totally paralysed right arm. I was 21, now 54. I had no surgery, I don't regret this. Decided to totally ignore limitations (easily done aged 21) adapted very quickly to one handed life, got married, had 3 kids, worked- the effect of the injury on my life (once the pain stopped being constant) was minimal and now, aged 54, I very rarely even think of it, unless I bash it or it gets cold, then I wish I'd had it amputated :) Except for a steering knob on my car, I have no adaptations to help with life, mainly because I honestly don't think of myself as disabled and the only thing I can't do is peel potatoes, which is definitely a good thing.

I can't get my hand in my pocket because the pattern of my injury means the palm of my paralysed hand faces forwards and is fixed in that position. Many bpi have hands that face backwards or are in a neutral position so they can fit more easily into pockets than mine does.
I have had my bpi since 1980 so I'm pretty used to it and have always worn jeans. People really don't notice as much as you think, my lower arm is stick thin and my wasted hand is usually purplish in colour, yet nobody seems to notice at all. Getting comfortable with showing the arm and hand in public is an important healing and recovery stage of this injury, and it takes everyone a different amount of time to adjust. I hope your husband can get to this stage soon, meanwhile the support you are already giving him will be invaluable. You seem to have understood the importance of this to him. It really is the 'little' things like this that affect us the most, people without bpi often think the paralysed arm is a really big deal, but it is nothing compared to things like putting your hand in your pocket!

Thanks for your replies. Sue, he does keep his hand in the pockets of his trousers but I think as Igonda said if the pockets of jeans were straight cut, he might find it easier. Sure, Jenny i think loose jeans might be a good option.
